Pro lighting set up

Just a curiosity thing as I attempt to learn. Can someone explain how / why professional grow lights are so far from canopy? It looks like lights can be 4 to 6 feet from plants in some instances, how is that efficient and what kind of PPFD would these lights put out compared to more standard 1 to 2 feet from canopy lights?

Please define what your understanding of "professional grow lights" is. Are you talking LED?

I use High Intensity Discharge lamps which were for the longest time the de-facto professional standard that stood for decades. I keep them sometimes 8-12" from my canopy (600-1000W).

Yeah I suppose LED or HPS. It seems all lights recommend a hanging height of between 12” and 24” inches, but then when you see a pro set up lights look several feet away from canopy. I’ve attached a random example. I’m just wondering how come in larger gardens lights can be so far away.
