According to a source close to the family, Jack Herer, much beloved Emperor of Hemp, is dead. The marijuana hero collapsed backstage on Saturday, September 15, at “Hempstalk 2009″ in Portland, Oregon. Herer had just given a fiery speech to the crowd on the future of hemp when he suffered a heart attack and a significant loss of oxygen. Herer died today, September 18, at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland.
Jack Herer was born June 18, 1939. A former Goldwater Republican, Herer became a political activist and the author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes, a book which is now a classic polemic in the effort to decriminalize marijuana. Herer was perhaps the world’s most famous activist for the decriminalization of marijuana and the utilization of hemp.
Herer argued for the decriminalization and utilization of marijuana because it has been shown to be a renewable source of fuel, food, and medicine, and can be grown in virtually any part of the world. Herer was one of the first to show that the U.S. government deliberately hides the proof of marijuana’s efficacy and utility. Herer devoted his life in support of cannabis, hemp and marijuana.
Herer suffered a stroke and heart attack in 2000 at another Oregon event. Although he had since recovered, the 70-year-old activist spoke with a stutter and walked with a limp. Just minutes before his speech, Herer looked fit and said, “I’m getting better and better and better. I’m healthier than I’ve been…”
Herer was a true American hero who spoke truth to power. He stood up for freedom while many others failed to do so. He will be missed.

Contrary to previous reports, Jack Herer is still alive. The Oregonian is reporting the activist is in critical condition at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland Oregon. In addition, celebstoner has retracted their announcement of Herer's death. In light of these facts it is with pleasure the Portland Progressive Examiner retracts an earlier report of Herer's death.

Jack Herer is the author of "The Emperor Wears No Clothes" the best-selling cult classic that ignited the Hemp Revolution worldwide.
(SALEM, Ore.) - The Emperor of Hemp is getting the best treatment of all, the very hemp oil that he has proclaimed to be the world's greatest healing agent.
As of this morning there was little change in his condition. He has not awakened, and is in stable but critical condition. On this, the seventh day since Jack Herer was struck down by a heart attack, he is still fighting for his life, but he's not fighting it alone.
Jack has long been an advocate of the healing properities of the hemp plant, over 30 years. A big step forward was his introduction to a special hemp oil, a remedy discovered by Rick Simpson.
Last year, Jack told me that this miracle cure had changed his life. He showed me his legs, which had multiple small scars due to Diabetes. Some of these wounds had bothered him for years, but once he treated them with the hemp oil, they were healed.
The medicinal properties of hemp oil are not unknown, but in the United States, this discussion has been somewhat limited to "preaching to the choir", as the FDA has no interest in researching the plant.
Jack knows this all too well, and had delivered a passionate speech minutes before he fell ill, exentuating his belief in the power of the plant.
Now his supporters say they are counting on the oil above all else.
"We ask for every one to focus their energies toward spiritually connecting with Jack and telling him it's time to wake up," another friend said. "He's got a lot of things he's in the middle of, and we need him to wake up today, even for a brief moment, to show his loved ones that he's healing, and continuing to fight."

Jack Herer is scheduled to go on a European tour with Rick Simpson, beginning in Prague, Czechoslovakia in November. Rick is from Nova Scotia, Canada, and alleges to be curing cancer with concentrated cannabis hemp oil (watch his video: "Run from the Cure"). Jack Herer did his research, used the oil himself, and gave it the thumbs up.
Last Saturday he told Dr. Leveque, "I haven't felt this good in years," and told his assistant Joy that he "felt like walking without help," another indicator that he was feeling well before his heart attack. He has been using Rick Simpson's oil for seventeen months.
