Pot users under the age of 18

I smoked pot for the first time at age 23. I never experimented with drugs in my youth but did become a heavy drinker. I guess I am not normal in that aspect but I was always trying to look out for my future (knowing how many doors a pot conviction would close in the white collar world).

Anyways I have a member of my family who habitually smoked pot from about age 15 to age 17. From 17 to 18 he had been caught a few times and was only doing it occasionally. Recently his court ordered counselor recommended that he be taken to a psychiatrist for some paranoia issues. At this point I think he had just passed a piss test so it had to have been at least a few weeks since he smoked (barring him using a detox kit). So the psychiatrist uncovers some symptoms that was hiding (because even though he thought these things, he knew they were crazy). She gave him heavy anti-psychotics and they almost committed him (he was about like the guy from "Beautiful Mind" but hiding it really well.

The psychiatrist told his mom that chances are good that the habitatual pot use played a major factor in this. She never came out and said "marijuana made your kid crazy", she basically said that it magnified the problem big time. While I personally am still sifting though all the propaganda coming out of the UK about how "super-skunk" turns perfectly normal people into schizophrenics, I can say that as a layperson I don't think more chemicals are good on an adolescent's developing body.

So this kid is 18 years old and looking at quite possibly a LIFETIME of medication and a battle inside his own head. So if any of you are under 18 and smoking, just think about it and do a little research, mental illness is very, very serious.

I believe marijuana can exacerbate existing issues, however I highly doubt that it is the sole cause of mental conditions. However, some people self medicate with marijuana, some conditions don't show up until your late teens and early twenties.

Isolated instance, in my opinion.

I personally didnt smoke when I was younger, until I was 19 to be specific. Tried it a couple times in high school, but I never really enjoyed the shit that was available to a bunch of hill-billy kids in Buckley, Wa.

I did however know plenty of kids, and have since known even more that smoked through their teens. Some of them have blue collar jobs. Some of them have white collar jobs. Some of them are bums. It's all over the board, and I think its wrong for anyone to generalize in such a manner.

Sounds like the psychiatrist is one of those conservative shrinks that only reads the left hand column of the science journal. Its sad to see a professional use her credentials to make such a statement.

Ciggarettes can also give you cancer and kill you! and if you drink enough alchohol you will get poisoned and die!

Everything in moderation! (funny i say that as i am a huge Ganja user.)

i dont quite get what your tyring to say

i mean millions of teens habitually smoke marijuana and come out just fine

are you agreeing with the psychologist? the extra chemicals are the cannaboids? or the heavy medication they are going to put him on are the extra chemicals

i think hed be alot better off with the pot than the scripts theyll put him on

I live in the UK and hear this 'The more you mess with Cannabis, the more it messes with your mind' shit all the time.

There is no REAL evidence supporting it, only loosely correlated satistical analysis.

What they fail to mention is the fact that approx 10% of adults in this country are Daily users, so obviously around that same percentage of Adults commited with psychological problems will be regular user.

Further more it doesn't take into account the fact that so many people with psychologic 'disorders' self medicate with green to try and stop themselves feeling like that.

I for one know that when I 'need to chill' (e.i. stop thinking irrationally sad/angry thoughts), I'd rather have a spliff of green I've grown myself than take govenment sanctions chemicals (prozac/xanax/etc).

The UK Govenment, Gordon Brown in particular, is full of this kind of anti pot propoganda, just look at the way he has tried to TRICK the whole nation into believing it has been reclassified to a Class B (it actually remains at class C, this is a Government Misconception, check the home office website).

EDIT: Sorry I know that was kind of off topic, but I've been using regularly since the age of 14 (7 years) and NEVER sufferend from Paranoia (besides thinking I could get arrested, but thats not irrational when dealing with an ILLEGAL drug, and is only caused by it prohibition.)

Sorry for the Rant.

i think the main thing, other than don't abuse anything, is that your at higher risk if you have a genetic predisposition to mental illness, ie. if within your family tree, there is a repeated or even single person who had a serious mental condition then you are at much higher risk of the mental illness being brought out within you.

I am with you, I think if there is underlying mental illness marijuana has the potential to bring it to the surface in the adolescent mind. On a purely animal level think about the changes the whole body goes through at about that time.

Again I am not a professional but as someone who has dealt with these kind of family issues and mental illness (actually had a family member stab her step-grandfather to death) that is where I come down on it.

i thought i seen that it has been moved to class B.... did it go back down AGAIN?

gordon brown is a cock. he cant run in a straight line never mind a country. apparently MPs are trying to vote him out.

WHY CAN NO1 RUN THIS COUNTRY PROPERLY!!

oh yer, on topic:

i dont think weed caused that, maybe helped it along but i wouldnt keep him on any heavy medication. just give him a prescription to pick up some weed from pharmacy every week or so. no harm done, no expensive research etc

No man, it was never upgraded. It was only a suggestion to parliment. For something like that to go through it would need to be voted in by Parliment.
The earliest that this COULD take affect would be early next year, however, parliment won't vote this through, it's against public opinion as well as the opinion of the advisory body they assigned to look into it.

Gordon Brown is a dictator in the making, but luckily we have safe guards against it.

that is cool that you are "looking out" for other people, but i think thats is mostly bullshit. maybe if you smoke all the time and smoke too much when you do, maybe then it would fuck you up when you are older. i am 16 and i will keep rolling spliffs weather or not it makes me crazy.

There is no proof that marijuana does things to your head if you smoke it at a young age. I started smoking when I was 13 and I know a few people that started smoking when they were younger and all of us are now in college functioning like normal human beings. If someone is already schizophrenic then they should never do any drug because there is actual proof that drugs can amplify those problems. However I think any normal person that smoke weed will stay normal.
