Pot size

Need some opinions on pot size...my father has been growing for over 30 years and grows in 1gal. milk jugs.. I personally think that's to small, and try to convince him to get larger pots, but he is very stubborn and set in his ways..he says that's all the dirt you need for a healthy plant..I agree...if you want plants to only be around 24" tall..but I'm pretty sure more dirt=larger plants, and yeilds. Right? We both do closet grows around 4'x4' under HPS, MH, and CFLs. Opinions please..

If that's how he wants to grow let him
It's his grow

Sometimes parents are just so set in their ways it's useless arguing with them or trying to show them another way

Let him have his way

You could try your way, and if it is better than his, maybe he will take notice and change his ways next time. I feel like most people are stuck in their ways until you show them a better way, with better results.

If it supplies him with medicine that he likes and it's enough to take care of him who cares .......maybe he's a quality over quantity guy ......but I bet one thing for sure nobody cares about what size pot it was grown in if there enjoying the smoke ........sounds like maybe you want impressive yeilds and he just wants some homegrown for himself ........hey if he's happy let him B ......you be the heavy hitter

I agree with all of you...just looking for some pot size insite from some experienced growers.
I use the rule of thumb, 1 gallon = 1 month of life. So, if you are doing 1 month veg and a 2 month flower, I would use a 3 gallon pot. This can be adjusted to strain, available space and how long of life the plant will growing.

depends on how big ya wanna go?

I grow 3 foot plants in half gallon pots all the time, I do land race sat's in 1 gallon pots, I use 2 gallon pots when I wanna bump yields and have grown as many as 5 plants in one 3 gallon pot

5 plants in one 3 gallon?! Hot damn RM3, that's some badass shit! You wouldn't happen to have a pic of that do you?

I kinda treat it like the old gold fish saying give it a bigger tank and it will grow more ......this is obviously only true to an extent because we don't see any great white shark sized gold fish from being in huge tanks ......so to answer your question simply yes ......I think you kinda knew the answer to this already because if bigger pots didn't yeild or grow bigger plants we all would be growing in solo cups

I looked and there are not a lot of pics that show the pot, I tend to take bud pics when flowering 8)

last time I did it it was 3 plants, found a veg pic and an early flower pic

Damn man, how did it end overall? Would you prefer 3 plants in a 3 gallon or 1 plant in their own gallon? Very interesting stuff...
not a preference, more about plant counts and pheno hunting, in CO they count the root ball as a plant even if it is harvested and just sittin on the floor.

Point is it works a charm, the whole root bound thing is mostly overstated

I took on the rule of thumb of minimum 1ltr per week of plant life. Gallons are useless to me as gallons are different in US and UK.
I think this rule of thumb came from a Jorge Cervantes book. I also read before growing to never put more than one plant in each pot. I could guess why but here you see RM3 above doing just that. So what can I say about that. Myth busting or lucky who knows. I know he knows his shit though.
@Vaorbust the only way you can sort out the argument is to do a side by side and show your dad the results. If you do it your way and compare to his then that leaves room for him to say there are other variables between father and sons grow.
Nice that you two can grow together though!!
