Pot Size Thoughts

I have some new ladies getting ready for Flowering and I had a thought about pot size last night sparked by another thread I was posting in.

I have been using 5"x5"x5" square pots in a modified SOG/SCROG style grow, I keep my plants below 30" because of space requirements but with the square pots I can get a dozen or so ladies on the go at a time.

If the ladies were to have more space to grow roots but were grown to the same height they would produce more bud?

That is my hypothesis, any thoughts?

Interesting hypothesis, and while I no expert by any means this did get me to thinking. Oh, and maybe it's cause I'm new here, or that I'm old... lol, but I don't know what your modified "SOG/SCROG" style grow is, but do understand the sea of green aspect.

With that I imagine there being available "air space" at maturity with your current set up, hence the hypothesis, but this is assumption on my part. That being said, it sounds plausible to increase yield with additional root space volume, but how will this effect the balance on available light, air space, nute's, etc. It will be interesting to know what the experts have to say.

This also makes me wonder about the depth of the pots at 5". Again, not an indoor expert at all, but I once built a room for someone where their design was gently sloping large diameter pipes (6" to 8") with 5" pots in cutouts in the pipe. At maturity the roots were several feet into the main pipe, but the overall height of the plants was relatively low, less than 3' per design. Hmm, like I said this made me think...

Hey gman, seen you around. Thanks for the thoughts.

My thought was to try and find deeper pots, so they were 5"x5"8" or so, I could also go a little wider with my limited space but not much.

My modified SOG/SCROG is a SOG theory but I clear all buds from the bottom half or so of my plants to concentrate the buds growth at the top colas. I've attached a pic of a 5 week old Kush lady.

More roots=more bud.

i would go with atleast a 8" pot if you can, if not more. I`d say as deep as you can get without compromiseing your space issue. I am also doing a SOG, i go with 3 gallon pots from seed to finish, and i also have a few 5 gallon buckets in their. But in my opinion if you are in 5" deep pots right now i would defiently think about transplanting into something bigger ASAP.

Its not so much about transplanting or not. I have a perpetual cycle going and have had at least 20+ plants grown in 5x5x5's, I have 4 nice new blueberry plants that should be ready for flowering in a week or two and was thinking of doing a little test, 2 in 5x5x5s and 2 in something larger and see the difference but wanted some opinions in the meantime.

I'll keep this thread alive when I start the test for anyone that is truely interested.

Those are about the same size I use too. I do a perpetual cycle myself too. I once went with bigger pots thinking more roots bigger buds, but this wasn't the case. I got less plants into my space with the same amount of bud on each plant as I got with the smaller pots. I don't allow alot of veg time. I take cuttings and they have 3 weeks to root and get ready to be put into flowering. So after I tried the bigger pots I checked the roots out to see what kind of root ball I had. It was about the same size as what I have in the smaller pots. So I now had all this wasted space and dirt with no roots in it. I went back to the smaller pots. The only advantage to the bigger pots was I didn't have to water as much. but I don't mind having to water. I want to fill my grow space and not waste much room and dirt. Bigger pots doesn't mean better. Nice plants can be grow in small pots like you have there.


ETA: I just check, my pots are 6" round and about 6-7" deep.

Thanks M4A1, sounds like we have a very similiar setup, I was going with the smaller pots for space too. I work beside my grow room so its pretty easy to wander over and water anytime.

I did just have another thought, I have a couple plants to be harvested in a week or so, I havent ever realy paid attention to the root ball AFTER a grow, I will look at what I harvest and see just how root bound it looks, that might give me an idea as to how much more root could have formed.

I want to keep my space usage to a minimum which is why I was going to try and find deeper square pots still 5x5, take up another couple inches vertically insead of horizontally.
