pot plants cannot reach full potential

Plants grown in pots never reach their full potential, images of their roots show.

A medical imaging technique called magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been used by researchers to capture plant pot root snapshots.

The pictures reveal that the roots "sense the size of the pot" and restrict the growth of the plant.

The findings have been presented at the Society for Experimental Biology's annual meeting in Salzburg, Austria.

Lead researcher Hendrik Poorter, from the Julich research institute in Germany, told BBC Nature that as soon as he saw the results, he re-potted all of his houseplants.

"I thought, you poor guys, what have I done to you?" he recalled.

For the imaging study the research team focused on two species - sugarbeet and barley.

Dr Poorter's colleague Dagmar van Dusschoten produced the MRI scans. The technique, used widely in medicine, reveals the water molecules within the plant roots.

The resulting 3D map of the roots' structure stretching to the outer limits of the pot shows, for the first time, exactly how restricted potted plants are.

In their experiments on 80 different species, the team found that doubling a pot's size caused a plant to grow almost half as big again.

"The most surprising thing is that there seems to be no end to the pot limitation," explained Dr Poorter.

"For every plant species we looked at, pot size was the factor limiting its growth."

Many of my friends are growing in kiddy pools this year, and I'm settling into 10 us gallon(40liter) flexi tub grows, with much fun for plant and me, they come with good handles easy to lift, and the yield is worth it, but as a grower its essential to me that I shuffle my plants according to weather and light, they need to be portable, although these boffins in the article from the BBC, may speak the truth, we as growers must find a compromise between the needs of the plant and us

The fact the 'we' reap considerable bounty at each harvest, with happy and productive plants, leads me to think that that article ....is bullshit!
so long as you are not root bound, and give what the plant needs ....everyone is happy?

ps. make 6-9 1 inch holes in the bottom of the tub, cover the holes with some insect mesh or gauze

guys out in cali dig holes with a back hoe like 15 foot across holes, and then fill it with good soil,,put like 5 plants in that hole, ive seen photos of 12-15 foot plants growing in a hole that size,it was vid i watched on utube while back

From the article on New Scientist:
"When they reach the edge, they send some kind of signal to the shoots to say, 'there's a problem - stop growing'."Each plant appeared to be trying to escape its pot; more than three quarters of the root system was in the outer half of the container.
"The inside of the pot is hardly used," explained Dr Poorter.
So with this in mind - while there may be a limitation of container grown plants, doing the staggered repotting throughout the growth cycle would help manage some of this. I'd also be curious to know what the results are with air pruning pot systems.

look at my nice 2 oz plant out of a cup...I get 10 ozers out of 12 inch tapered 9 quart potter ...that's 2 1/2 gallon pots

great example.

Many growers, specially the out door guys swear by the air pot / smart pots.
