Hey in post 57 there were two pix of what I thought might be a chicken and idk what the other animal was. It was furry and kinda cool looking soooo what was it?

those are silkie chickens. their feathers look furry for whatever reason, and they are a little smaller and more docile than most chicken breeds. they've been laying us about 2 or 3 eggs a day.

just came here to update the thread, i just planted the potatoes for autumn harvest: 6 red pontiac, 8 california whites, and 10 russets. sadly i was unable to find more yukon gold. and i couldn't find any walla walla starts that looked decent, so no onions this autumn.

i alos finished my "three sisters" garden. now that the corn is tall enough, i sowed my pole beans and a few cantaloupe and cucumbers. now i have to keep it all watered in the hot sun for a week, lots of work, but it will pay off, i hope.

sorry for slacking. here is an update on the garden.

mcpurple, as you can see, two of my 'point to prove' plants look great, the two others look like shit. they have all stayed small, but on the plus side i did not spend a dime on them.

there's something kinda overtly sexual about tomatoes.

spring 2012 is right around the corner!

...and i am way ahead of the curve this year. not many pics to show, as everything is in the ground germinating and looks about the same as last year.

so far i have planted:

~60 sweet walla walla onion
18 potatoes (yukon gold, russet burbank, and german butterball, 6 of each)
cherry belle radishes (a shitload)
romaine lettuce (a shitload)
~120 super sugar snap peas.

have already tilled out a 12x24 plot for the greenhouse and will be building a newer, stronger one this year. i built last year's greenhouse to last for one year and it became pretty much useless about 3 days after harvest was over. i don't want any close calls this year.

the rest of what i'll be planting:

~12 tomato plants (roma and oregon spring)
peppers (not sure what kind or how many)
more strawberries (chickens have destroyed most of them)
another "pot in earth" herb garden with same array as last year
cucumbers
zucchini squash
pumpkins (lots)
watermelon (lots)
cantaloupe
rhubarb
artichoke
corn (a fucking shitload)
pole beans (a shitload)
sunflowers
carrots

wildflowers and shasta daisies will be grown in the front along with the rose bushes. the two little trees i found last year overwintered just fine and are ready to refoliate.

we are up to 6 chickens and will be using our broody birds to hatch more chicks once things get warm. might be up to a dozen chickens by fall. i also built a rabit hutch and we will be getting some rabbits too. not sure what kind yet.

looking forward to another awesome spring/summer and will have pics once shit starts growing.

they're still germinating, it snowed an inch or so on them here. my main worry is the chickens, they just love freshly tilled dirt. they dig in there looking for bugs and whatnot. so far, so good.

PS - farmer's almanac has no problem with planting peas under the snow. peas are one of those "as soon as the soil is workable" crops, which s coded speak for "as soon as the ground is not frozen solid".

well, the peas are popping up despite some interference from the chickens. they dug out a few of the seeds at the bottom of the hill i made, but the ones on top made it.

radishes and lettuces also survived (mostly) despite chicken mayhem. i planted those over by where the chickens take 'dirt baths', so that area is pretty much a loss anyway. i'll have pics of it all tomorrow.

planted all my flowers out front yesterday, shasta daisies got transplanted into the ground and i sowed california poppy, wildflower, and black eyed susan seeds.

planted carrots out back, too. three rows in total, 2 of them being odd colored varieties and 1 row being normal orange carrots.

did some more tilling of the greenhouse and as much of the area where corn will be grown as i could before the rain hit.

the real good news is that i just got my tax refund back from uncle sam, and i will be cashing it tomorrow and starting on the greenhouse. this post is to hold my feet to the fire so i follow through on the pics tomorrow.

You must have a ton of time Uncle Buck. That is quite a big garden, can't wait to see some pictures.

I transplanted my cilantro and basil yesterday. Ya gotta love fresh herbs.

the building part is done. now i need to wait until the sun comes out for a few days to put up the plastic.

Oh no he didn't just frame up a greenhouse. I am green with envy and going now. Straight to my shrinks appt. Tears.......always a brides maid. Never a bride. Lol! I WANNA GH!!!

it's all built now and i have about 400 seeds germinating inside.

~100 early corn
~100 late bicolor corn
~25 cucumbers (marketmore 76)
~35 sunflowers (mammoth grey stripe)
~20 watermelon (sugar baby)
~15 cantaloupe (hale's jumbo)
~100 beans (pole beans)
~25 pumpkins (jack o lantern)
~15 squash (forget which kind)
~10 zucchini (forget which kind)

already have a dozen tomato plants germinated and ready for transplant, half are roma and the other half are a local variety.

potatoes are now breaking the soil, onions are about a foot tall, ate my first radish already, lettuce is coming along nicely. carrots just started popping up the other day, i have all the colored varieties and some normal ones too. blueberry bushes are getting massive. need to weed my strawberry patch and do a burn pile to get rid of last year's junk and the channukah bush.
