poppy indoors question

Yeah, SWIM's thinking mid-late Oct for over-wintering... crazy bastard's gonna free farm some of the more remote areas of his locale. This is only to augment his harvest without having to turn his backyard into Afghanistan, which would be more beautiful than even the most tasteful English garden, but, ya know... I'll def have SWIM get some pics tomorrow as I'm sure he would love the input from SWIY.

I love meeting others with a passion for this flower!

Looks good.

What kind of soil is SWIY using? The plants look very happy in it.

Did the seedlings ever topple over? If not, they are past that stage so SWIY doesn't have anything to worry about.

SWIY will probably have to thin to just one or two plants in the current planter. SWIM is using a much bigger container and was only able to keep three out of the fifty or so seedlings.

Also, those clay pots might not be suitable at all for even a single decent sized plant. The plant might never reach it's potential. However, it's not something SWIM has tried before.

SWIM is using recycled potting soil from purposefully neglected waverider petunias w/ time-release fert pellets (a lot of those were removed, tho). You can't really tell from the pics but the seedlings are actually toppled over right now; puny little stems with full veg on top. They do seem to be growing well, though, at lease on top. SWIM lowered the rig a little to see if that will help.

SWIM actually thinned them down to 5 a couple of hours ago. He will take at least another two out in the next week. It was SWIM's drooling jones for an arrangement that caused him to ambitiously/naively think he could crowd so many in despite everything he's read... a lot of smaller pods rather than a few big ones, I guess, idk... wishful thinking.

He was planning on seeing how one plant would grow in the little 4" clay pot, just to see if it would dwarf, but alas, because it wasn't directly under the rig, all of the sprouts died. The other clay pot has a bell pepper sprout that's soon to meet a similar fate.

At what point did SWIY put up the reflective sides around his grow?

SWIM didn't add the reflective sides until about 50 to 60 days. Should have had it the entire time.

SWIM didn't plan the whole thing out very well at the beginning for the first grow. SWIM has learned a lot.

SWIM put some up today... he hopes it doesn't turn the rig into an oven. He doesn't have a fan to spare, no wall AC units to direct cool air from, nor a polar bear's sphincter to stick the pot in. He'll work with what he has...

Have the petals fallen off of SWIY's flower yet? Any more bolts?

SWIY must be one proud poppy! And this is from 2 plants? Hopefully he'll c some more bolts soon... Is he using the same light setup per mentioned earlier? The mixed 2700/6500? If so, what do u think the results would be if he were to replace the 2700s with 6500s? I hear the latter is better for flowering... sure wish SWIM had some 2700s to get him thru the veg..

About how big is that pod? I can't really relate it to the CFL above it...

Not very big. It started off about the size of a jumbo sized grape at flowering. It's only the second day since petals dropped and it's grown about 60% bigger. However, it's SWIM's understanding they continue to grow for about two weeks after petals drop off.

There are three plants. Looks to be about 20 pods total. You can't see them all in the picture.

Almost all of SWIM's lighting is from 2700k CFLs right now. There's only one 6500k bulb in the mix at this time. SWIM decided to try the MJ lighting technique: 6500k veg, 2700k flower. It seems to be working out.

I would be curious to know, specifically, how much the pod grows in those two weeks. I've seen pics of ripe pods next to ones with the stamens still hanging below (like SWIY's) and the difference was tremendous...

SMIM will be picking up some 2700ks today on his outing with the mrs. to add to the rig. His plan is to replace 3/4 of the 6500ks with 27's to see what happens.

Hey I got a carpet of little green sprouts... could be weeds but I'd expect the other flower boxes to have the same stuff in then.

Couple pictures of the beautiful Hungarian Blue flower.

Also a couple pictures of the first pod. It's continuing to grow. It's almost doubled in size since the petals dropped off.

So do any poppies work or is it only a specific kind? I gave some to mom last year and they made the same pods, but figured they were different

Papaver Somniferum work.

California Poppies and Oriental Poppies look nice, but that's about it.

So if you are looking for some look at the scientific name of the poppies. If they aren't papaver somniferum you are out of luck.

Goddamnit, saddam... homeboy's grow's lookin' sweeter all the time... congrats to SWIY!

Sad news on SWIM's front... While at Walmart with his wife (hereafter to be referred to as mom #2), he found a 100w 2700k (HUGE) for 12 bones. His mom #2 didn't see SWIM's reasoning as to why this silly, expensive light bulb was so exciting, and, hasn't this business with the indoor petunia seed-viability test gone on long enough? yada yada this that bitch bitch... Being that his mom#2 is a complete narcotics agent of a woman, she wouldn't be down with the ultimate goal of his new hobby of growing ornamentals in the dark basement where nobody goes, so he had to concede the point and pull the plug on his lil' veg's... At least, in the spring, he will have a backyard full of gig's, whites, danish flags, and an assortment of peoniflorums (my, aren't those pretty; yes, baby... they sure are)...

So drink a cold one (or, saddam, a warm one in a month or so) for SWIM, boys, for tonight, he mourns...
