Poor rooting, what is the cause?

Hello,

I dropped a bag seed into a small rockwool cube and put it into a medium size cube when it rooted then dropped that into a 5 gallon bucket of soil. After a month of growing outside, it showed male so I pulled it and inspected the roots. It appears that no roots developed into the rockwool, they either came out of the stem into the dirt above the cube or in much smaller numbers grew out the bottom.

I broke the cube open in the picture to show. I'm guessing that I caused several problems. First is that I could have improperly prepared the rockwool so that it repels root growth due to high PH and poor watering so the top most roots developed quicker than the bottom.

is this the case or is my root growth common for a young plant?

Thanks for the help!
