Gordo here, Place it four inches above the top of the plant. Place your hand under the light and see how warm it feels. If it's hot raise it, if not leave it at four inches. Increase the height as the plant grows.

Gordo is wrong. Place about 1-2 inches away and (if you need it) aim a small fan at it to help it cool. I would turn on the MH when they're about 5-6 inches. You could use the MH at like 3 inches but its all up to you. Since you have the t5 you could use that through veg

HID = Working
CFL / LED = Playing

Use led or cfl to start seedlings and root clones. HID for all else, MH in veg and HPS flower.

End of subject period. :)

so if i turn on 4 t5 24 watt lights on it about 2 inches away i can use that until i change the light cycle to 12/12 right
?

Don't let that light get the best of ya. Turn that fucker on and grow some bud. It ain't that complicated.

Gordo here, Four inches seemed reasonable. If it's cool, lower the light, if it's hot, raise it. The three ways of heat transfer, conduction, radiation, and convection. The bulb doesn't touch the leaf, that eliminates conduction. The light energy from the bulb hits the leaf, thermal heat, radiation. The bulb itself gives off heat which heats the air (fluid transfer) which heats the leaf, convection.
