Please help me understand what this guy is doing to top

Don't fret yourself too much over that thread friend. Just know this; You can top your plant anytime you want after it has grown at least 3 nodes; topping doesn't mean your going to magically get 2 or 4 colas that were NOT there before, this is FALSE. The only thing that will happen is that since you CHOPPED the main top/shoot the ones that are coming out as side branches of that main top will then be the main tops, nothing more. People have this crazy misconception that your going to magically get 2 or more tops or branches that were not there before, that's total bullshit friend. Topping is nothing more than cutting off your main top and concentrating the energy into the other ones; that's it, if anything your not getting new tops your getting rid of one.

Fail. The point is to allow the plant to have as little side branching as possible, since most of it is popcorn. You are re-directing the energy into 4 main branches, which will the the top two you cut between seen in his picture, and the 2 below it, or even the two below that. You then wait for the plant to recover from the cut, a couple of days, and trim off all branches off the main stem, below the top ones you want. If you tie those four into 4 different directions, just slightsly to pull them apart, you get great light penetration.

The maintenance is the most important part. I lay on my stomach every night and keep cutting away the side branching coming off my desired 4 main branches, until they start getting to my desired height prior to flowering.

This gives me 4 heavy branches, that can hold themselves up, with 4 big colas, and a great amount of UPPER side branching that produces big nugs. Since you seperated them, there is lots of room for them to fill in, and you get a banging garden.

With this system, depending on the strain, I pull .9 to 1.1 grams per watt. It is a sealed room with co2, hydro (house and garden nutes), and in an ebb and grow.

It's a lot of work......but ever seen 6 lbs of fat frosty nugs, and 3 cases of fine trim in mason jars, and multiple gallon ziplocks of popcorn for making BHO? I don't include any of that stuff in my calculations either.

Do the cut.......I promise it's the way to go.

Disclaimer: Some plants don't love to be manhandled....don't be pissed at me if you have sensative plants that aren't happy with you after this please :).

His sticky is all you need to know.....that's how I learned, and tha's how I teach when I consult MMJ patients in my State.

Bit quick to throw that Fail in there hu bra. I don't know what piece of shit strains you've been growing but side branches can and do get you good quality hard buds/colas if you do it right and you know what your doing. Topping is nothing more than a redirection of hormones and lighting. Just because you have a preference for only having main colas doesn't mean that's what this guys wants to do you know. What your doing is topping then lollipop-ping just to have the main colas and nothing more. BTW you are misleading yourself by saying you don't want popcorn buds yet you claim to have grown multiple gallon zip bags of it so what's all that work for if your still gonna get that much popcorn anyway??

There is always some popcorn....you can't cut it all off, and it's nice to have some for BHO. Keeing the lower portion of your branches trimmed allows for good airflow, light penetration, and good clean growing.

I was in a very bad mood, and shouldn't have thrown in fail. I've been in bad pain all day, ran out of percs, and can't medicate for fear of a drug test trying to get a job. I'm sorry I did that, it was immature on my behalf. Excuses only satisfy the giver however.

I was last running WW by DNA, and L.A. Woman for the last turn. I'm about to go all brainstorm on the next one, so I'll see how that goes, they are from clone grown into mother by me. I'm excited to see how they run. Supposed to be the best of both worlds.

Anyway, thanks for pointing out something I needed to apologize for my misbehavior. I'm not really like that.....it's easy to be a jerk to someone when it's just words and not face to face. I'm a family guy, and love to grow, been doing it for 15 yrs already.

I do, however, never grow junk strains.....after this one, I have Critical Yumbolt, Bubba Kush, AK 48, Blueberry Skunk, and all the lucky 7 freebies, and a bunch of other freebies from a previous order.

Thanks for the words and allow me to say it's refreshing to see that level of maturity anywhere on the web, kudos for the sincerity. By the way I agree with good clean growing; a clean and organized garden does a lot of the work on it's own. What I do is just wait until she reaches her top height and then begin to remove shoots that didn't make it to the canopy or any that I see that won't produce much and only waste energy trying to reach the canopy as she's trying to bud; result: airy fluffy buds. In any case beauty and technique in this case is the in the eye of the beholder (and the strain). That special from the ttude sounds very good, good luck on those and hope you feel better.

i have topped many plants but i have never topped to get 4 main colas like U.B's thread.

the reason for growing out to 5 or 6 nodes before topping is to get the plant more mature before you top. this way your 4 main branches have a good start growing before topping. i would probly top it just above the 3rd node and cut out the 2 branches at the very bottom node. then as the 4 main branches grow, do a little lollypopping on them.
