Plants too tiny

I've had my plants sprouted in my greenhouse for almost five weeks or so and they are only about 2-3 inches. is this a normal from seed size? why are they growing so slowly? they have tons of sun, good circulation in their potting mediums, and are watered when they dry out, but not as far as droop. could i be overwatering just a little bit, stunting them? i keep the temp around 75 in the daytime and no lower than 62 at night. i began foliar feeding with liquid seaweed a few days ago, with a little success observable, but i still feel they should really, by now, be taking off and ready for me to begin fertilizing the soil. they have 2-4 sets of leaves, but no full fans yet. the first set may have 3 fans, but most are still single fanned. is any of this totally normal, and am i just freaking out, or do they need something?

It sounds like your plants are very stunted. My little ones are 28 days old from seed and are already over a foot tall (would be taller but I fimmed about 4-5days ago). You should have been giving them some nutes after the second week. What exactly are the plants sitting in? Soil/Medium? Container size?

What are some causes of slow plant growth?

Overwatering
Soil moisture that is not absorbed rapidly turns stagnant; the plant quickly uses up any oxygen within the water, then is unable to respire further, resulting in moisture low in o2. Pythium thrives in low-oxygen (anaerobic) conditions.

In short, overwatering will slowly suffocate your roots, preventing sufficient oxygen uptake by the roots, and ultimately causing root rot.

Soil with high bark content
This can cause a “bonsai” effect. The roots will not be able to grow through the bark, preferring to grow around the chunks of bark. This slows down root growth and most obviously plant growth. Ive encounter this recently; once transplanted into proper soil, they have shown remarkable recovery.

[Editor's note: bark is quite acidic, may may afect soil water pH]

Light deprivation
Although your plant may be receiving light, particular strains may require higher light levels than others. A recommended light level for full bud development is 50 watts/m2. Full sunlight is 100,000 lumens max.

Low nutrient strength
The plant is unable to acquire the necessary amounts of nutrients to sustain high growth rates. Large and mature plants can take higher nutrient strengths.

Nutrient strength is also related to the light intensity; plants under fluorescent lights usually require a lower nutrient concentration than under HIDs.

Nutrient lockup
Adding too much of a nutrient (ex. Magnesium) can “lockup” one or more nutrients, rendering them chemically unavailable to the plant. Nutrient lockup can occur at extreme pH ranges (ie. under 5.0, over 7.0).

by Ranger2000:

Light spectrum
Light that does not contain enough red spectrum (too much blue)
Light spectrum can have a dramatic effect on plant growth, with different ligh frequencies affecting different photosynthetic processes within the leaf. Selecting a blue spectrum in a vegetative growth phase is preferred, with red spectrum in flowering.

pH
pH is too high or too low (ie. acidic soil. The plants come out as mutants).
Plants are unable to absorb nutrients, or in adequate quantities within certain pH ranges. Optimum pH varies with each medium. Hydroponics and aeroponics: 5.6-5.8. Soilless: 6.0-6.3 Soil: 6.5-7.0.

Many soilless mixtures can be fairly acidic, due to their high % bark content.

Low temperatures
Plant metabolism will decrease at low temperatures. Chemical reactions within the plant will take longer. Optimum plant growth often requires close temperature regulation; daytime temperatures between 25C and 30C are preferred. Differences in daytime and nighttime temps should not be dramatic, as this difference may shock the plant.

by 10K:

Low soil / medium temp
Evaporation from a medium (i.e. peat pots) tends to chill the medium quite a bit due to the evaporative cooling effect. As the peat pot warms, it draws moisture outward, the evap effect cools the peat (like sweating). New growers often make the mistake of adding excessive amounts of water, resulting in cold soil, poor root formation and slowed growth

helps a ton, you're right. now i knew they were too wet, but they're in peat moss and i let it dry once and it would reabsorb properly? anyhow, i wasn't going to start my nutes (Foliage Pro 9-3-6) till week five anyhow, but now i guess i'll start feeding
thanks for all the help!!! you guys are awesome. If i knew how to rep, i would! so PM me or just reply here again and i DEF will. THANKS AGAIN

oh, and the containers are, plastic cups, and i think that when i put gravel in them i put too much, and i transplant tomorrow, to have them in full peat moss. damn, i'm so worried about my babies, and i keep hurting them!!! this is my bagseed growe, but my real grow starts in a few days when my seeds get here, so ...*sigh* i guess i really need more help than i'd realized. I'll take a close look at what you guys have given me and get back to you when i see some results. I've just heard so many over-nuteing horror stories, i was scared to sstart them too early. argh, now I'm frazzled that my plants are tinier even than i thought. well....... lol, it's all good, i guess i'll just have to get my shit in gear.
should i start using dirt instead of peat moss? sounds like it's a good idea to mix... like i said, i'm totally worried, cause i kinda made an investment in these, and if it doesn't pay off when i crop out, well, you know. this is sorta my only real job, in my mind , right now.

Can you get some pics ??????

I think you should go soil instead. Peat moss won't drain as well and when it breaks down it causes the soil to be more acidic. If you're going organic a bit mixed in with the soil is good as it will help regulate PH. Mixing in some perlite and maybe vermiculite would be good too, have a read around for soil mixes, there are a lot of gentle natural ingredients you can add to feed but not overwhelm them. Though you don't need to add stuff for nutrients while it's still in it's seedling stage

Yes definatelly soil i only use nute free top soil mixed with perlite (65% soil and 35% perlite) and thats all.

the might need big soil container. if i keep mine in cups and move half into big soil pots... the ones in cups stay at 3 inches
the ones in big containers grow to 2 feet

proof enuff for me!

oh, and, TRAILERPARKBOYS RULES!!! fuck yeah. hehe. anyhow, I'll have some pics up in a few days, as I may have said before, i had a dog related disaster that ruined my camera and a lot of seedlings. also, i planted in the ground and one of my babies (one of the bigger ones) was dug up by something and left to lay in the sun for anywhere from 1-2.5 days! I was so sadddd... Anyhow, I replanted (hopefully*) her* and she's started to grow again, bit by bit (since 2 days ago) but i really doubt she'll (again, hopefully) make it much longer, espe ially with all of this rain... : ( Again, thanks all, and I'll have pics up as SOON as i can get another digicam. Going to check on my babies right now, so BBL w/Update.

i bought topsoil, 100 kilos of it and it was all chunky and shitty and i was pissed, so i used it for my vegetable garden, nad it did alright, but still, it needed a LOT of perlite and i had to take a lot of tree bark and woodchips out of it as to not obstruct root growth. i wonder if it matters? it must, but how much?

okay... so i know i've been promising pics and all that, and I'm sorry, it's just been one thing after another, and today i dropped three of my girls... it was BAD... i almost cried, i still feel like it i can't believe it. plus i had one of those cool little worm water reader meters made of clay (changes color with moisture) and it broke into like four pieces... the dirt got soaked cause it all fel and water landed on top, plus the pots all landed upside down on the 8 day old seedlings. i think the roots were torn up a bit on two of the three that fell, but the one looks really really really bad......
i guess i'll know in a few days... any suggestions?
by the way, thx for the Rep youngbuck, nice to get some props here and there.

well.... send some good energy towards these little girls, i think they're going to make it, well, 2 out of 3, and we'll see. thanks again everyone. I promise that as soon as i get the opportunity to sync my cam with my PC i'll havepics^

youngbuck- what about vermiculite. i was using this ratio, but i was throwing in a little humus and a tiny bit of manure, and halving the perlite and vermiculite. think i'm going overboard. i'm totally nooB, so really open to suggestions. (guess i can't rep you in the same thread you repped me in, huh? i figured out how to do it, by the way, lol.either way the plants, the new ones anyhow, looked great till i dropped the three.... I'm so upset... I was not even this upset last time i broke up... i really had conencted with these plants, in my mind, and it was as if I had been the one to fall and have my entire home and all my belongings fall on me, crushing me... but once i uncovered them and rinsed them off... htey looked pretty good... but still, i think i ripped the roots off of one of them, i just got them into the soil FAST without thinking or looking, just reacting to the situation....sigh* what a freaking week...thanks for following....

well guys, they were finally getting healthier and nice and big, and i went out to feed and water and i found... stems.... stuck in the earth, and a few sucker leaves at intervals.. deer... bastard deer. I'd have killed them by hand if i'd cought them eating my girls... even though it wasn't the deers fauklt, the plants DID smell pretty tasty, but i used liquid fence, and groundhog and rabbit liquid fence, and another, and piss, and NOTHING WORKED and now i have instead of 19, nine, and they're seedlings.... sigh* i worked so hard to keep them all alive,.....

time to weed out the males. i hate getting rid of them. I'm going to press them and frame them in a glass shadow box, i'll be selling them in like a month or so if anyone is interested. Everything from a 3-5 inch leaf to a 2 foot tall plant. Hopefully i can find a nice fram for the big one. I'll post pics soon. may have to do em all, heli's flying about, sccaring mmeeee. PM me
