Pipe Growin'

Hey everyone, I was looking around this site awhile back on what kind of set up I wanted to try next to be my next bad ass home built system. What I found was a grow done by Heath Robinson and I give full props to this guy cause wow. just wow. I would say to anyone to check out his grow and read it all the way through because there are a few interesting things that he's trying that I have never heard of before.

He is able to use one res that's maybe 15 gals and he grows 86 plants!! Like holy fack! The only water changes are between veg and flower and then flush at the end.

So I've tried setting up a system that is really nothing as amazing as Heath's but figured I knew the basics of what he was doing and gave it a go. Well, i started out with 2 4" ABS pipes that were a little over 5' long that sit side by side with ten holes in each for 3.5" net pots. The first row was clones and the second was actually all started from seed. I was having trouble with a few plants in soil before this so without knowing their sex they became my clones.

Ok so my system is essentially a fountain pump in a 15 gal res, and it pumps to each end of the pipes where they are sloped back to the res. The pump runs continuously creating moving water over the root zone. Moving water holds D. O. so because of this we don't have to add any air pumps. At the start when the roots were just sticking out the bottoms I had drilled a 2" hole in a cap for the ends and was able to control the height that would sit in the pipes before it over flowed.

Now the plants kinda took off after I put them in this system and really didn't catch that they would outgrow the tiny 4" pipe. By outgrow I mean that the roots grew together and now take up pretty much any open space in the pipe. This made the flow of water just come right out the top pipe and onto my floor....SHIT EH. A quick flip to 12/12 on the lights showed about 5 males so they were quickly cut and I tried to go in and cut out roots to make room for the leftovers.

I am now about 3rd week into flower holding my fingers crossed that I will have no more problems with this system. If I had to go back to the start though all that would change is getting bigger pipe to allow more room for the roots. Anyway wish me luck.

Very cool man this thing looks like it saves alot of space compared to a bunch of 5 gallon buckets. Looks like it's workin for ya!

now you can angle them all like 20 into a circular v at 45 degrees and drop a vertical 600 watt in the middlt and sog em. lol. cool.

well as for your watering problem, how about trying to get a recycling time and just have the pump go for 1 minute then off for 5............ -a great person (Stinkbud) developed something like that with aeroponics

That was actually one of the first things that came to mind before i had my water problem. I was turning the pump on every 3 hours for 15 mins and thats when it over flowed on me. I believe it was because when the pump was shut off the roots that would normally be submerged were aloud to grow "uncontrollably" into areas which made a blockage in the pipe. So for now as long as the water is running the roots don't grow out of the water which i'm hoping will keep it lower.
