That was winter solstice, not Christmas. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of JC, which should have been in march I believe, and it was moved to December to coincide with the winter solstice to assimilate the Pagans into the Christian religion that's why some of the customs of Christmas have pre-christian themes, just another form of control.
