I was out shopping today and I was out of hand sanitizer for traveling. It's a convenient way to disinfect hands when dealing with the dirty public.

Anyway, two large stores were completely out. The dude at CVS said they were out and didn't know when they would have them again. He said face masks and other protective items were also out.

Ok, whatever. I checked at my warehouse club and they were out also.

So for giggles I checked amazon. Yup. Unless you want to spend $200.

Looks like the hoarders and scalpers have struck. Hopefully toilet paper is safe. ;) But at least I have plenty to smoke.

My wife swears that if you are healthy they will do zip to protect you. They work best to keep the person wearing them from infecting others.

Clearly the shopping public doesn't believe that.......

I'm going to try to find some. Maybe ask my dentist for a couple of freebies.

I travel on a lot of planes when I'm working and you can't always chose who sits near you. I've had people cough so hard from behind I could feel my hair move. ewwwwww. Not an all the time thing. Just in case.

You can still get infected through your eyes if someone coughs in your face I'm sorry to say.

You might be able to get some at an industrial supply place, off the beaten track, also you could get a full face mask or a half mask and use N95 carts or even biohazard carts, hospitals might have already beat you to it however. Look for industrial safety suppliers in your area, usually located in industrial parks, but you might have to buy a case, no problem with resale however.

You can find n95 construction masks pretty easily. I may just toss a couple in my backpack. They are bulkier but will still work in a pinch. The problem is the surgical style face masks are mostly made in china, and they have a severe shortage right now so have probably stopped exports.

It will take time for other producers to ramp up and get certs. But eventually the supply will catch up.

A mask worn by the sick person will do some good at protecting others. They aren't effective at protecting people FROM it. But, still, I think you are right to carry some around in case you get sick. I'll do the same.

well, when you have maddow and all shrieking into the camera..?

my daughter too called me panicked because of the reporting, empty shelves at the store and amazon is gouging at $80 per 50 masks..hospitals and UCs have been ransacked (even the hospital storage closet the shelf is empty of backup).

I don't get the mask hype. Really. They are only effective for the healthy when you have to be around someone sick for an extended period of time. As in very close quarters. You wouldn't benefit from wearing one day to day or even in a location with good ventilation like a ball park or theater.

I was only interested for the extreme case where someone next to me is hacking a pound of lung meat up over the course of a couple of hours in a plane.

If you are sick, you should wear one in public. But otherwise they don't offer enough protection to bother with.

Besides, if you are vaccine free, your immune system is strong enough to fight off any virus. And fearful leader says it is a hoax! Go forth boldly and breathe bravely! ;)

You benefit when the SICK person wears one. They aren't effective at protecting a healthy person who wears one.

Thanks for keeping masks on hand in case you get sick.

I have some too. I'm not dumb enough to use them up wearing them when I'm healthy but care about others, so I'll wear one if I feel like I'm coming down with something. I'm guessing a hospital will provide your daughter with PPE if she gets sick. Or maybe you can see fit to give her some of yours. Like any loving and caring mother would do? hmm?

ahhhhhh an anti vaccer, eh? no thank you..i'll stick to my vaccines and flu shots..while everyone else is sick i'm buzzing around.

the masks are good for those who are sick so that respiratory droplets aren't spread onto others..there is a tendency to touch your face mouth nose a bazillion times a day and that stops transfer from those mucous areas onto others or public areas of touch door handles etc. chicken pox is spread through transmission of pock fluid that can live for i believe up to one week on surfaces.

as for masks on a healthy person? i'd rather have it on knowing others are coughing sneezing and not being safe..have you been to a Wal-Mart recently? lower iq is just that..cows are smarter.
