Pasta Express Cool tube?

Hi all,

1st time grower here, so I think its some sort of rule that my 1st post is a question. Albeit this one may be a little out of the ordinary for a noob.
So I have bought a used 430w hps ‘son agro’ light & ballast setup for flowering, I only have 4 sq’ so it is definitely overkill. Because I am in a limited space a cool tube is without a doubt a must, I am on a limited budget so I am making my own but having a hard time finding a pyrex ‘bake a round’ and I don’t really want to order one off ebay. I have found tons of the pasta express pasta cookers though. I am wondering if anyone else has any experience turning one into a cool tube. It has a bottom but it is plastic so I should be able to cut it no problem but my concern is that it may melt or give off noxious gasses if it gets too hot (or melts). The son agro bulb sheet says it has a max ‘bulb temp’ of 450 degrees C and a ‘bulb press temp’ of 210 degrees C. The pasta express can handle boiling water (100 degrees C +) but the press temperature is already double that!
Any thoughts?

hmmm it sounds like a good concept but for me a little risky some bulbs get hotter then what they say and it kinda sounds like a fire hazard

I had the same thought one day at a thrift store. I saw one and bought it but the 400w mh bulb I had was too fat for it. I made a plywood box just big enough for the bulb and some 4" holes in each end for the hoses. I bought 1/4 inch plexiglass from the hardware store along with 90 degree 4" elbows for dryer vent pipe. I put it all together and it works great. I was in a hurry and never put a reflector inside the box so there are some wasted lumens there but next time I'll be sure to put it in.

The whole concept behind a cool tube is that the constantly moving air carries away all the ambiant heat. As long as the fan keeps working you should be fine. The only heat that the tube should feel would be radiant heat, which is much less (that's why people can put thier cool tubes a couple of inches from thier plants).

Thanks for the replies guys, I'm thinking like Motto racer, I like the concept but it seems a little risky. "As long as the fans keep working you should be fine" I agree built properly with the fan running it should be fine but I like covering all the 'what if' scenarios and a fan quitting isnt unheard of & I dont want to risk a fire if a fan dies. Although I suppose the top of the tube would melt first releasing alot of the heat. Where as a bake a round would hold the heat and then who knows what. I could build a box but i know my hps bulb would fit in a pasta tube and its much simpler and i dont think would be any safer.
I think i will run a test, i'll buy a pasta tube and toss it in the oven and see what temp is starts to melt at and then put my hps bulb in there (with the oven off) and see what it gets up to then decide if its safe enough.
Thanks,:peace:
