Pairui drivers or not?

This guy is doing an awesome kit price for two of these, just done a search and saw some bad things mentioned about pairui drivers though, what's the consensus? Should I see if the guy can ship without drivers so I can source my own? If I were to go for meanwell, what drivers should I get to replace them?

Also whilst I have your attention and to save another thread

1. Can I easily upgrade the cobs, like for like, on that setup? Which ones would interchange with 1212's.

2. Should I hold out until some new cobs drop? I think I remmeber citizen or Luminus were bringing out some new ones in February?

i'm not an led expert... but the citizen cob minimum voltage is 47.8 (http://ce.citizen.co.jp/lighting_led/dl_data/datasheet/en/COB_5/CLU058-1825C4_P3372_1115.pdf) and the max voltage is 56. that kit has them at 36v, and it may not even light up. also, the cobs are 90 cri, which take more electricity to generate the same amount of pfd. 80 cri has a less optimal spectrum for plants, but with much higher photon production that makes up for it and much more.

if i'm assuming correctly you would only be able to run 3 CLU, at 77.5w, accounting for driver efficiency on the pairui. you could run all 5 of those chips comfortably at 48w on a HLG-240H-C1050.

Ah really? Should I not bother with the kit then? Im such a noob and im still struggling to get the knack of this DIY led stuff :(

All I want is 500w of awesome COBS for around 600 $ (shipped UK)

1212s run on 36v...the kit will work
 
personally, i would still put my money into 80 cri cxb3590s at 3500k, CD bin.
with leds you really get what you pay for, and side by side you would notice the difference.

maybe if you could ask him to verify the ppfd with sensors? otherwise it seems like he is using cree efficiency numbers to give an estimation.


do you mind if i ask the size of the area you plan to put these lights? it would help in comparing the costs.

Efficiency for both drivers is 93,5%.

Without drivers 480 Euro.

Yes you can easily upgrade the cobs. The heatsinks have a capability to 50W of any cob. CREE and bridgelux is good options.

The size is 1m^2, so around 3.3x3.3 in feet.

@CobKits hey, you don't have any hlg-240-c1050's in stock, what do you have to replace them for the aforementioned setup?

Also, what're your thoughts on upgrading the 1212's? Worthwhile or do you have a better suggestion on cob choices to get right off the bat? Thank you.

No problem at all. Just backing up my statement that 50w of CLU048-1212 at 1400mA gives out 2.14 umol/J/W and not using CXB3590 numbers.

i dont think any cob is worth upgrading/replacing. best to just drop the current and run them next to new ones

1212s are still an outstanding value in that for their cost, $x in 1212s will still outperform anything out there at the same cost. but it depends on what youre using for cooling. certianly discrete heatsinks/holders/reflectors etc favor larger output chips

i dont want to make any calls until i get my hands on the gen 6 citis. but if they are all getting similar bumps across the board the 1212 will prob still be a value leader

the luminus has similar cost/efficiency as the 1212 but is a physically larger chip so it fits that popular 50-70W range well, where 1212s are best run at 30-50W imo
