DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER PERE MARQUETTE TWP. The Pere Marquette Township Board of Trustees approved a new ordinance Tuesday night to regulate placement of sites to grow and dispense medical marijuana in the township.
The zoning ordinance was developed by the townships planning commission, which held a public hearing on the issue in August. The township board held a first reading of the proposed ordinance earlier in September and adopted it Tuesday.
No one was here, Supervisor Jim McInnis said about attendance at Tuesdays meeting and comments on the ordinance.
Pere Marquette Townships ordinance follows Michigan law and also sets restrictions, which are consistent with those already in place for other home occupations, Terry Wahr, building and zoning director for the township, has said.
One exception is the number of people who can work at a home occupation as a primary caregiver growing and dispensing marijuana. The proposed ordinance limits the number to one, while other qualifying family members and up to one other person are allowed for other home occupations.
The proposed ordinance along with state law would allow one primary caregiver to grow up to 12 marijuana plants for medical use by up to five qualifying patients.
It prohibits all medical marijuana operations by two or more primary caregivers and/or qualifying patients. Those forbidden operations include, but are not limited to, dispensaries, storefronts, cooperatives, bars, and clubs.
Budget discussion
Also during Tuesdays meeting, the board discussed the townships 2012 budget for the calendar year beginning Jan. 1, 2012.
Supervisor Jim McInnis has said hes working to develop a budget that is balanced with revenues and expenditures both about $1.7 million while keeping the tax rate level at 2.85 mills.
McInnis said he expects the board will take action on the budget in October, after it has held a public hearing on the issue.
Also on Tuesday, the board discussed its meeting dates and times for 2012. McInnis expects those times to be 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month, with exceptions made during election dates.
