I'd not bother with HPS unless it was a choice for HPS over cheap unknown LED. However, that $500 wont buy enough good quality LED to fill your space SSS as has been said. Personally i'd start with a smaller space and spend the time to research a simple cob diy build/ parts list to suit budget. As I mentioned the next best alternative (i'd choose) might be buying one of the better commercial panels 'used' I'm only familiar with Area 51's 'older' light SGS-160 but have seen at least 3/4 on recent ebay /g'tree. You might get two of them for $5/600 and they are proven bud machines (x2=320w but i'd say approaching 600w hps in good hands)

if i need it for veging and flowering how much do i need to spend to make a decent panel? what does my budget need to be to get me a panel that will cover 1.2m x 1.2m?

do i need to keep an led panel the same distance away from the plants as the HPS?

With hps how can i work in a smaller space? do i just flip them over to flowering earlier and grow a couple of smaller plants?

I'd been planning for one bushy plant in that space as tall as I could grow it. I've got 1.6m high of grow space in that 1.2m box.

am i under some illusion that the leds are better in a smaller space? that they'll let me grow the plants a foot taller in my confined space?

so if I simplify what I meant:

what's it going to cost to DIY my own LED panel that will suit my space? just in case I adjust my budget?

some veging mainly flowering, enough of both to cover my space 1.2m x 1.2m x 1.6m high?

(can I have a dimmer switch to reduce intensity as the plants get taller? to maximise my space?)

Next, for those HID sayers, do i just grow a smaller plant? or 2 smaller plants? or 4? lol

lastly, main reason I was going LED's was to maximise my space. if they have to be kept the same distance from the plants, defeats the purpose, i'd go HID's because it's cheaper and reliable, and I can't afford the panel's I'd want.

if i can get 3 opinions on these questions i'd be grateful and feel confident moving forward.

There is no physical way for a 900w LED to transfer less thermal energy into a room than a 600w hid without some sort of outside cooling loop such as water cooling. Heat is a function of total power displacement within the space. In order to reduce the amount of heat you have to reduce the amount of power being dissipated or remove the thermal energy at a faster rate.

You can build a vero 18 panel for about the price you're looking at. Vero 18+pico ezmate+ arctic alpine 11 GT is a very inexpensive package. Grab 16 of those and drive them at 1.05 amps and you have a very nice little light for only a little money.

Vero 18 is a cob, yes a led
Pico ezmate is the conector for veros
Artic alpine 11 is a cpu cooler dyers use it for cool cobs.

Use Google And u can see some photos of them.

There is no way to dim these. That would require a different driver and running the emitters in series. I don't recommend tackling that until you build a basic one first. Mount one per square foot.

Distance from the cannopy is one of those 'play it by ear' type of deals. The goal is to get the light as close as you can without burning or bleaching them.

I have an electrician who is going to help me build this. He can run the emitters in series if you can recommend the right driver.

Can i have a switch for veging and flowering? do these cobs produce light to sort both? or will i need to build a separate panel for each?

Can I mount on all this on a wooden bracket?

3 Meanwell HLG-120H-C700s would power 18 Vero 29s at .7 amps. Perfect match.

Emitters would be running at about 155 LPW with the arctic alpine coolers.

Maybe 140-145 LPW using passive radial heatsinks.

18 emitters in a square grid works out very nice too.

guys a newb here overwhelmed with choice.

I'm working with a space that is 1.6m high, 1.2m deep, and 2m long.

Planning on splitting the space into two, 1.2 x 1.2, and 0.8 x 1.2 for clones/veging.

Thinking of a T5 panel for clones and seeds, and an LED in the main compartment.

I have a mate who is an electrician, and quality LED's are prohibitive in expense.

is it going to be possible for me to build a unit with at least 900w of power, or something that will take over for a 600w MH/HPS lamp?

I'm woried about the heat and also the limit of the height using a hot lamp. limited space and all.

I'd love to order parts and build my own with help, but feeling a little overwhelmed.

Is this a project worth doing? or at this stage, with my first grow, should I buy a mars hydro panel?

I imagine i'm going to offend some of you. But if you can show me how I can spend less than $500 australian, building a quality panel that will last me 5 years, i'll take that option.

But i can get a 1200w Mars Hydro II led panel for $550 australian, postage and all.

Am i'm being a bit ambitious with my first grow? is a 900-1200w Mars Hydro panel gonna do the job?
been down the led road last 2 years in the end i worked out led for veg hps for flower u wont get a better grow ;)

and yes led can do what hps can but do u wanna chuck 2000 k into a grow or 250 bucks ?? really come down to how much money u wanna spend me i use led for veg about 400 watts of a mix or blackstar vipar and one chinese led but use 2 600w hps for flower works well

Maximizing his space, I would want to use 2 600w HPS if going that route. Similar results with 2 450 watt led lamps would result in similar price over 5 years of use due to electrical savings.

Another one that irks me, any LED lamp will be outdated in 2 years. No, any LED lamp build to put out a specific amount of light in a specific area won't be outdated ever in regards to light output. In two years you might get the same output for a bit less wattage but that doesn't mean the older lamp is "outdated".

Also, assuming you're getting adequate light with the Chinese brand lamp, you can do the same more efficiently (and cheaper over time) with DIY. Cost wise, buying a Chinese lamp is like buying something that's already outdated just to save some money up front.

would you guys get angry if i said i was considering giving up on all this for a year and saving up for BC northern lights bloombox or a trinity 3.0 supercloset.

A second option with Vero 29s, a bit less light a bit less cost.

2 HLG-185H-C700s powering 16 V29s at .7 amps. 400 watts and another perfect driver match. 4x4 grid of emitters also very nice.

your post would work well with my electrician mate but went mostly over my head.

What's the difference between the vero 29s and the vero 18s ?

as a beginner why would i be a tard going for a grow box?

you reckon i can do it cheaper?

the grow box is ready to go and comes with support.

i think i'm dumb enough that i need that support ay.

Both of those prebuilt boxes offer far smaller flowering space than what you're talking about in the original post. They're also much more expensive than what we've been talking about. Pay the electrician to help you build the lamp.

You could build a veg lamp with V29s. I just recently built a small 60 watt veg lamp using Vero 18s.

Honestly, it might be best to take it one lamp at a time though. Why not grab a cheap 100W CFL panel for veg and build one 450w LED for one 1.2x1.2 meter flower chamber? If you like the results then build another one. If you got an air cooled 600w HPS you could run it in the other 1.2x1.2 and compare results.
