Outdoor soil volume question

Here are the stats..
1 foot tall plant currently
1/2 gal containers currently
We finish outdoors here in late October
I have almost three months to veg before 2 months of flower

Given my stats, how much soil volume would you allow this plant, on this time frame, in order to maximize yeild but without being to generous.
I am asking here because I want to utilize my material best I can without over doing it.

also depends on what your goals are, training, topping, etc.
typically at LEAST a 25 gal, and that'll be rootbound, come Halloween time.

I will be doing a fair amount of topping/fimming just keep keep my flowers smaller to avoid mold issues later. Full sun, 11-12 hrs at least.
