Outdoor Smells and Neighbors

About how far away would you be able to smell an outdoor grow of 90 or so 25gallon smart pots, around 1500 sq ft?

Put another way, how far would neighbors have to be away from such a grow site to not smell it in September?

about a pound or so.

Right humidity and wind, half mile easy.

I was thinking more like 2-3?

It'd be a 40x40 square with the 90ish plants screened in with sun screen so any wind would be slowed somewhat.

Does it travel further in dry or humid conditions?

Humid, it's usually worse in the early mornings when air is humid. The lower the grow area to the surrounding area, the less the smell travels as humid air sinks.

Do you think a windbreak could help? I plan to sort of shield the growing area with quite a few tomatoes growing vertically on trellises around 8-9' tall. By August, the tomatoes will have filled in the trellises and looped back over the top. I'm thinking it could provide visual cover beyond the screens and also help with the wind you mentioned.

Thanks. Didn't know that.

The one time I had noticed the plants smell stronger is when they need water. Didn't notice the humidity thing, but that might have been because I stayed inside the few days it rained last year.

It may help with the wind, but 90 plants is gonna put off some serious funk.

You could mix in some of the most fragrant flowers you can fi.d with the tomatos. I've done a cpl outdoor grows and you could smell them from a lo.g ways off.
They were nowhere near 90. I k.ow a cpl people that ride arou.d in the country around harvest time early in the mornings and find grows that way.

moist, humid air transmits odors better than dry. people that live around large hog or chicken farms can smell this 2 miles away.

Can anyone speak to the efficacy of this technique:


"you need to calculate the volume of your greenhouse and then put in an air intake that will recplace that volume 10 times per hour.

Make sure the air enters at the bottom in a way in kinda makes circles round the greenhouse , cuz of the temperature the air will rise and exit through an exit hole you made.

Also put in an oscillating fan.

this way you will smell close to nothing outside the greenhouse while in the greenhouse the smell will be nice

I use a torin 1000 kubic meters industrial fan , it is not expensive and also doens't use much electricity"

A guy on ICmag was saying to use ozone and an elevated exhaust

If you run an Ozone generator downstream from your greenhouse, with it's own mixing room/baffle box you should have no problems.

If you stick in too much O3, it will smell of O3 around the area

If you stick it in the greenhouse you may zap most of the flower's smell in the last few weeks, BUT, O3 works very well sterilizing air, killing mould spores, so may also be a handy tool against any mould outbreaks.

Re smells in general, look at they guys hunting Deer sitting up in high seats, only 3 or 4m up and very reclusive wild animals [usualy] cannot smell them up there, so, if you stick your exhaust/exit up high, nobody should be smelling any O3, or weed.

If you power your O3 generator via a computer UPS, emergency battery backup, if there is a powercut, the neighbourhood does not get stunk out by all your suddenly un oxidised flowed scents, the machine carries on zapping it on battery power.

Sounds like you have some great friends ?

I had some skunks that were in pots. Imo they kicked up the smell directly after watering them. The had that smell from a distance. But 20 minutes after watering or feeding them it really kicked up and it was a huge difference. About the only way to explain it would be comparing the smell of an unlit cigarette to the smell of a reburn cigarette.
