Outdoor Potency

I have heard that bud grown outdoors is seldom as potent as hydro/indoor grown. Is this true? If so, what are some good ways to increase potency with my outdoor garden?

Start off with potent and proven genetics, and provide the plant with all the nutrients it will need. This is a pretty broad question.. I might be biased but I thought my Red Dragon was pretty on par with most indoor weed, of course not the dankest of indoor but it was better than most indoor I get my hands on :D

Potency is genetic, and will remain constant no matter how it's grown. The trick is flowering them until they're ripe.

IMHO you can grow more potent and more flavorful bud outdoors than you can indoors. The only advantage you have when you grow indoors is you can provide perfect conditions like temp and water

grow a strain that fits your climate, If you live far from the equator dont grow a sativa.

make sure it will be fully mature before frost.

I'd love to have my buds tested. I'd put my Redwood Kush and North Shore Maui (707 Headband x Maui Wowwie) up there potency wise. :)

Natural sun provides things that cannot be replicated via artificial lighting. I grew the exact same beans last year in both environments, the OD is better. And the outdoor was in shitty soil to boot.

that is not true at all. I vend at a dispensary in mendo county where all the buds are from greenhouses, and they have a cannabinoid analysis machine onsite, so everything gets tested. the THC% has more to do with:
1) genetics
2) maturity
2) how well the bud was trimmed (outdoor usually is not well trimmed, giving lower numbers),
3) and what part of the plant the bud came from (top buds test higher than low buds, go figure).

Hydroponic or aeroponic bud compared to outdoor bud is completely different. "Hydro" buds will produce a much more intense high for a shorter period of time as opposed to outdoor grown buds producing a much longer lasting steady high. bongsmilie

very interesting observation, this is obviously not a fact. but interesting none the less. I wouldn't know about the dro.

Every so often I like to test the market and actually buy some herb. I grow only for myself, but I like to compete against the for profit guys just for fun. The last hydro I bought was back in July, paid $125 for 7 grams of kush...it was a re-sell so I didn't know the strain. The stuff certainly packed a punch, and I found one seed in it...which I could not crack(lol). In this case I would have to agree with you, after 90 minutes I wanted more. I also compared it to some of the outdoor seeded brick going around...called mids apparently. LOL, these guys sell the shit and have zero product knowledge!. Some of these "mids" are a much better value than "dro".

Everyone I've shared any of my crop with has been very impressed with the potency. The smell and taste is a lot more pronounced compared to the indoor stuff too. But the indoor around here, for the most part, isn't much to write home about to begin with.

Do EVERYTHING right, grow giant, dank beauties, feed them the best, trim them beautifully, dry them correctly, and THEN fuck them up by curing them in plastic bins! If you don't cure them right, you've wasted your time trying for the dank best. I know, I've done it too many times before I got it thru my thick head. Do it right ALL THE WAY! It makes it worth it all.....

I've done both, in and out, and IMHO I believe what Matt Rize said to be 100% true. Potency is all genetics, all we can do as growers is provide our plants the best conditions/nutrients to grow them in as we can.
Indoor you get "better looking" product due to perfect temps, humidity, even lighting, smaller crops equal more attention, which equal nicer looking end product.
Outdoor you get MUCH BETTER LIGHTING, but tough to control the temps, humidity, and even lighting.
Greenhouses offer the best of both worlds...You can better regulate the temps and humidity while providing natural sunlight to your crop.
I prefer Greenhouse or outdoor herbs vs. indoor herbs just because that's the way Mother Nature did it...if it's good enough for her, then it's good enough for me!
Okay I lied....weed is like women...I like it ALL, blonde, Brunette, Red Heads, Black hair, Hydro, indoor, outdoor, greenhouse...I like them all!
