It can be done, but I imagine daily waterings and frequent feedings were required.
The larger the available soil mass, the more forgiving of mistakes.

Yup and can be had on sale at times for like 6 or seven bucks. Drill some holes in the sides and bottom and I keep mine up off the ground on a couple 4x4's so the bottom holes dont get plugged up. I've tried the 5 gallon buckets and find they are too narrow and plants can get root bound.
To contol the God damned slugs I grease the outside of the tubs and toss some coarse salt on the grease....a slug will never cross over this. Put a bit of salt on one of the bastards and see what happens.

yes streetlights and other outside lighting will screw with your plants photo-period
if i put my babies in a pine field (the tallest tree is only about 10 ft and they're spaced apart in some areas) and use 5 gal buckets, will I be able to only water once a week? thats as often as I can check them 
I'm just worried about it drying out in 3 days, but I'm hoping the surrounding trees will help keep the moisture in. Would it be better to only drill one hole at the bottom instead of a few?

I've read lots of places that it's okay to bury your pots, or put them in a hole to keep the plants lower. I have a couple of plants in black 5-gallon buckets, buried maybe 6" into the ground. I'd thought about burying them up to the outside lip to hide them better, but is this a good idea? Would it be better to drill some small holes in the sides if I do this?

A week is too long to leave them unattended. If the pots are placed in deep holes, the water will last longer.
There are ways to make this work, but they're still iffy.
If you have abundant pine trees you're almost assured of acidic, clay based soil. That's the primary reason that this year I went to outdoor container growing. My tired back said it was done digging 3'x3'x3' holes in the ground and mixing a grow medium capable of ignoring the native soil.

For outdoors no pots too big,
Not that I'm aware of. I read a lot of posts advocating what I term gimmicks but there's no substitute for water in the the light grow mediums required for proper drainage.
