Hello Everyone,
I'm new to posting in the forum but have been reading for quite some time. I hope I am posting this in the right spot. I find these forums absolutely amazing when it comes to the amount of knowledge the community has and instrumental to pushing the needle further. So I wanted to post what I am doing(as best as I can) to share with the community and those who may not be members but browsing google for some insight. Please join in and share your thoughts! I am by no means an expert and always looking for new ideas.
Current grow:
Currently, I am working with 10 Blue Dream clones and 2 Blue Dream Haze clones. For those who aren't familiar with the BDH strain, it was created for feminized seeds of Blue Dream. A few years back I was given a few Blue Dream plants 3 weeks into flower that were damn near done for. I ended up nursing them back to health, only to be forced to harvest early a few weeks later due to weather. Although I consider it a failed grow I got to see the potential of this strain and have been itching for the opportunity to grow them from start to finish. Now, with several acres of property, tons of space and resources, it's on!
They are about 4-5 weeks old now and sitting in 3 gallon pots of Dr. Earth Premium Planting Mix. I did add some blood meal along with some guano and fish soil drench before transplant. For nutrients I am currently running the Earth Juice line up. Specifically: grow, catalyst, microblast, and SNS 209(in nutes and foliar) for pests. Luckily, I own the wonder well and my water comes out consistently between 6.3-6.5. So water sourcing or adjusting is no issue. Only issues I have encountered so far are the Gnats that I purchased with the soil(couldn't return them) and a sulfur deficiency that I detected within a few hours and immediately corrected with microblast. The Gnat numbers are not close to significant right now so I am hesitant using anything to combat them just yet, but this is something I am looking for ideas on. So far they are very healthy and growing rapidly, with the exception of one that is growing rapidly but has some sort of genetic issue with the leaves. Nothing drastic, but the first time I've seen this. I will try to post pictures. If it's any correlation it happens to be one of the Blue Dream Haze clones. However, the other is looking great.
The Plan:
The plan is grow these ladies outside in the west coast sun and use only LST. Right now they spend the day outside with the exception of coming in to receive supplemental light to simulate the daylight cycle of May 11 approx. 14 hours and 15 minutes where I am. I did this to keep them from vegging when they go outside fulltime on the 11th. These plants will not flower if the clones are immediately subjected to a 14-10 schedule. You can argue I'm wrong, but I have proof sitting in my garage
. I acquired the light of day data by the Navy's calculation they post online, a great tool for outdoor!
As of this time I plan to place 5 Blue Dreams and 1 Blue Dream Haze in ground(3' Diam. * 2' deep holes) and the remaining 5 Blue Dreams in 65 gallon smart pots. What about the other haze? I'm thinking of offing her for the sake of plant number limitation. I may use that spot to turn a clone of the strongest plant into a mother. Haven't decided yet. This will be my first time going in-ground, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Soil:
For the in-ground plants my plan for each hole is as follows:
(55%)8 cuft of compost loaded with perlite, coconut coir, worm castings, composted chicken manure, composted cow manure, feather meal, bat guanos, azomite rock powder, and diatomaceous earth. Made by a local company.
(30%)4.25 cuft of native soil. The soil around here tends to learn toward the sandy side and drains well. I'm surrounded by forest.
(15%)2 cuft of Fox Farm Happy Frog. This soil is has beneficial microbes and minimal amounts of nutrients that will help improve the overall mix and microbe content.
To be determined: Lime, of course. Would love to hear everyone's input on how much should be consider.
For the potted plants(simple):
1 bag of Happy Frog to 1 bag of Ocean Forest. Can't argue with results, and you can't surf the web without seeing them. I will likely add some perlite.
Goal: 3-4#'s per in-ground and 2#'s per smart pot. Too ambitious?
The major challenge of this is pest prevention. I live in the forest. Which means daily visits by bears, deer, raccoons, and every other pest you can think of. My main concern are the deer and caterpillars. I'm thinking some kind of mesh to keep the moths and butterflies off, then my 12 gauge for the deer and bears. Ok, maybe not the 12 gauge. A small fence will likely keep the deer out but the local bears are pretty destructive. I haven't had to deal with pests of this size. I would like to hear some ideas and experiences on this. Also, another thing I'm considering is some kind of wire fencing in the holes to prevent underground threats. I haven't seen anything to justify doing this yet, but this is my first time growing on this property and I would rather be over prepared than loose a plant half way through the season.
So far this is where I am at and will try to keep everyone posted. As I mentioned several time I would love to hear from everyone on their ideas and experiences. Thank you in advance!
