# of Colas!

I wanna get at least 8 maybe 16 colas when she's done. but I wanna have light evenly dispersed to even the lower growth shoots..

now, correct me if I'm wrong but can those lower growth shoots become top colas that are getting the same light as the other colas at the top.

I want them to be at the top with my other shoots.. and I want all my shoots including the first and second node shoots to shoot up and bush out.. is my only option to lst or can I supercrop more branches in different areas?

I topped and super cropped once each to this plant. super crop is healing as I write.

can I top side branches or is it not worth it doing? I want a bunch of colas. and you're saying super crop the main stem again? same place? or lower or higher than the previous?

I usually clone those baby shoots in the first two nodes, it allows for more airflow later in it's life and also redirects the energy to the top nodes. The plant exhibits dominance for upper nodes, it has a main cola in mind and will continue to put energy into this top unless you spread your canopy and confuse it... That's the gist of it, look into mainlining for a more through understanding of some of the core concepts at play. Admittedly I'm going to refresh my own memory..

that pic has me dying!!

lmfao but yeah originally that's what I wanted to do, but people were suggesting with it being my first grow to do something like topping and super cropping. so that's what i did. played it safe. lol anyways though I wanna maximize the number of colas. I already topped the terminal bud.. so in have two shoots at the top. I was wondering if people top their lower growth shoots like 1st 2nd or 3rd node shoots? will it result in two instead of one and will they make it to the top if I supercrop more branches above the lower shoots I wanna top.?

get me? lol I have a visual but don't know if I explained it right.

Careful. Plant stress is real! Although I don't recommend super cropping. It does work. Just put a few days or a week in between each time you bend a stem. I've become a believer in low stress training above any other method. Tie downs can accomplish the same goal with MUCH less chance of stressing plant into some problems.

Pick a plane to work in and a height..say 10" above the rim of the pot and just keep tying it down below that point, as one top takes over dominance, pinch it or tie it down below that plane of the plant, this will redistribute hormones and cause the lower shoots to come up. I have 2 I'm keeping as mothers, bonsai style, in 5 gal dwc. about 14" in dia and about 8" tall..doing what i said i now have over 30 tops on each. Cutting a top will result in 2 tops growing out of that shoot. I cut my mother back with some electric shears..:fire:..lol.. when they get to around 12-14" tall, I mow them back to 8" tall and unless i go back and prune out one of the the growth tips, my 30 tops would become 60 after one trim, 120 after 2, etc, etc.

There are a ton of training threads and there's really no wrong way to do it.

This sounds just like a colleague of mine who goes the extreme and hedge trims his with unbridled abandon just to prove a point and his in 10 gallon pots are easily 10-12 feet in diameter with chickenwire around the outside. He took a video of him going to town on some plants with fury in veg and they came back immaculately and frosty! I wouldn't do it though I am rough with my plants. I like everything in its proper place.

What I do is top the main stem right after cuttings are rooted and then later when the next lower two get to the same height as the two new top shoots I top them too. I usually end up doing that a few times. No point topping branches until they get to the same height as the ones above it that you topped a week or so earlier because the goal is to have them all at the same height. topping the main stem AND the lower ones at the same time would result in the lower ones still getting less light because they will still be down farther. So it's like top the main stem, several days later top the next lower two which will then have caught up in height, etc.

What was the total length of time from veg to harvest? Great job
I'm thinking about 16 weeks.
seriously nice. what you yield on her? how long was the veg and how's the smoke?
I got 6.5oz of dried bud and 1oz of sugar trim. This was a clone I vegged for 6 weeks.
She was the one that got away. It was tga Jack Skellington and I didn't clone her after the last run. After a 3 moth cure she was pure candy. Amazingly nice.

I was thinking of doing some lst on my plants (working on my first grow) but said decided not to. I've been thinking about it the last few days and once I repot them next week, I'm going to tie them down as they prepare to flip to 12/12. This thread did it for me. With my limited space (wardrobe flower room, T5+CFL) I see no reason not to after looking at the results you guys are showing. When my clones are rooted and transplanted (2nd run) I will have to try the top and tie method. I plan to take my next set of clones (the 3rd run) from flowering plants (monstercropping) and see how that goes.

Great examples in this thread. thanks for sharing. I might have to try some of these techniques with bonsai trees. I've thought it would be cool to do a "cascade" mj plant, could give interesting results for flowering. This photo is an example of a cascade (not one of my trees, just a photo from Google).

that bonsai tree looks beautiful. but you just gotta consider the weight of the buds during flower. it'll weigh it down and you'll just have to tie them to hold up..

That's true, but they'd be tied down anyways...which would probably also hold them up...strangely enough. Haha

I probably won't try until i get a bigger place, but if i ever do, ill share. A windswept plant would probably be just as good or better...

I've been growing bonsai for a few years. It's really fun but takes a long time to develop a tree that actually looks like a miniature version of a full sized tree. Lots of training, and even more waiting... but, time can keep them for life, and they only get better. :D

Check out Uncle Bens thread on topping techniques to get 2 or 4 main colas. I used this for my plant pictured here and chopped it right after the third sets of leaves. I think I counted around 24 main colas on this beauty and got just under a half pound from her. Gonna do that to all my plants now.
