Odor control for under 30 bucks, had fun with this one!

Hello all, so i got bored, and after reading a thread containing multiple odor control DIY formulas, i decided to adapt a series of them in order to make one taking positive points from each. And the only material you may have to buy is a fan, I used a 7 inch Honeywell which can be picked up for relatively cheap (15. dollars locally at wal-mart)


I had not seen a similar post (by reverof until i write this) but this DIY is for the person who may not have odor control on the top of their list, nutes, lighting etc. may come first to them, (i would hope...) but still wants a cheap alternative to knock down some of that odor. So for my "tube housing" rather than go straight to a larger diameter ducting, i fabricated a tapered housing using only materials i found around my house, and by that i mean a roll of duct tape, and cardboard. THATS IT! and it will work beautifully if you take the time to properly seal it as the concern is not moving HOT air but just neutralizing mell, which is why i can get away with using the tape and cardboard combo. SIDE NOTE: anyone who wants to bash a "ghetto setup" needs to stop trolling the DIY threads then. This would not be used in a room of mine necessarily BUT in the spirit of DIY and ingenuity i decided to do a thread so ZIP IT haters .

First i began fabricating the housing duct with large pieces of cardboard and duct tape in which i would later taper to create a narrow mouth.

Now, what i plan to do in order to make this an effective odor eliminator, is to go to home depot tomorrow, buy appropriately sized dryer ducting, and run that outside of my room with the coffee can and activated carbon method on the end to kill odor. SO im basically half way there with my blower component and housing all assembled, all i have to do as i said is attach my odor killer hose. Will complete TOMORROW!

Great idea for a low cost, easily available ducted fan. Good DIY except for the links instead of photos. Annoying as hell IMO.

Now for the constructive criticism. Those fans are terrible at pulling air, but do ok when pushing air, so your prototype is correct in basic design. I do think that the excessive taper and rough inside surface of the cardboard reducer is hindering airflow quite a bit, though. You should take $10 to Home Depot and get an 8"x 6" duct reducer and use foil or duct tape to attatch it to the fan. An 8"x 6" fits nearly perfect on the Honeywell fan. Then you can use standard 6" ducting and greatly increase airflow over your current design.

haha yeah i know thanks for the input! i simply wanted to see if i could make something by getting nothing haha. i mean i figured i could easily build it by using materials i know but for the DIY spirit i had to. i will more than likely perfect this rather than actually buying the duct reducer, as i wanted to go full out DIY haha and that would just compromise my initial motives, if you will. My thoughts are that i will completely smooth out the inside of it with duct tape. Then ultimately attaching the dryer duct and odor removal filter. I wonder why they posted as links rather than pics?

An inline fan such as a bathroom extractor fan will be cheaper than the cost of that fan and duct tape and will be strong enough to pull air through a filter (something your fan will need to but won't really be able to do) plus a lot more heavy duty. Tho if you have no cash and that is all you have lying around then better than nothing. All of my grows have been kludged together in some form or manner and some of the stuff i made was great, some did the job and the rest was a waste of time and resources, but I always had fun doing it and enjoyed every minute of it. Soz for babbling on but didn't want you to think I was dissing your design, just pointing a few things out. Peace

Absolutely agree with you 100 percent Maltese! i guess i should have more appropriate named it "odor control challenge: only household products" but its cool. Yeah this was geared toward that grower with no cash after buying lights and nutes an djust needs SOMETHING to kill a little odor. i have other, much better, odor setups but this was just a little project. much like you said, for the fun of it! No need for apologies, i enjoy hearing what other people have to say, after all thats why i joined lol.

Ha yeah I had some things laying around my place and my neighbor had the toggle switch. Its pretty simple and fairly effective. You could buy something for cheap and it would work just as good but I get a nut outta making things or something it was just fun. I don't have a thread on it.. I meant to take pics as i was building but..then i got and in the zone and forgot.

The PC fan was out of an old laptop that crashed. I took some thin electrical wire and connected the pos and neg to the input on the fan ran the pos from battery to the fan (not thru the toggle switch) and then took the negitives from each and ran them to the toggle in order to complete the circuit. YaY physics! taped all that shit in there and stuffed a drier sheet in the tube. Turned it on and at first just held a cig over it and the inlet tube pulls the air in with a noticeable amount of force and kept it from smelling so bad.. I figure I'd use it for my less socially acceptable smoking habits.. Ranting lol sorry.

What up dudes! I posted a comment yesterday that did not post for some reason? weird! But sorry it did not get completed yesterday. I am a bit of a procrastinator... hapens to the best of us... and i went to the HD to get duct and clamp etc. Well they changed their hours to close at 9 instead of 10 and i missed em by 14 minutes last night. BASTARDS. But im up and at em now and going to get supplies. I was pondering over the design and have concluded, through reading other similar posts, that for maximum effeciency, out of a blowing through the carbon as i am doing, to have the duct run up a wall causing the can to be verticle, and then blowing the air UP through the activated carbon in the can. Also i thought for the exit side of the can i would put a dryer sheet over it to freshen up that air even more and that could be changed however often with fresh ones!
Any ideas are appreciated guys!

I think you got a good idea there. You can find really cheap air intake filters from any car shop like autozone or something then maybe line the inside of the filters with drier sheets? lol i dunno I think whatever you have in mind will work though.

how cheap could i get an air filter at AZ you think nar?

Ok maybe not so cheap.. I just looked on autozones website and they were def not that cheap lol. it would be worth looking into tho maybe searching around walmart. I coulda sworn my buddy got one for his car for really cheap.. maybe not tho.. sry if im wrong on that lol

I just put a call into my local AZ, i can get a cone for around 10 bucks, so in the spirit of the build and title, i will use a can as my prototype and then perfect if needed down the road. Bout to go to Ace and get some ducting and some screen for the bottom of the can. Any suggestions for a screen type guys?

Masaah! do a DIY thread! I will probably use this during my current grow just as a test and because it is a relatively small grow. Nothing better than some DIY! am i right?
