NSA Data Center and The Deep Web?!?!

I recently stumbled upon a magazine article on the new NSA Data Center in Utah! In the article, they explain how this new MASSIVE spy center will store each and every text, call, email, web search etc. inside 100,000 sq. ft. of servers, cables, and storage! In total 900,000 sq. ft of technical support, and administration! Anyway... they also mention that the NSA is most interested in decrypting and tracking information used on the deep web (Silk Road, BlackMarket Reloaded, The Armory etc.)! Can they really do this??? This is far to much of an invasion of privacy! Feel free to share your input!

Yeah everytime I see them talk about real terror being on the internet I cringe, they are going to do their best to destroy it. They claim true fear about governments mounting hacking attacks on the US when we have make computer viruses to attack other countries nuclear and oil programs. Also you have the MPAA, and all the other crazy anti-piracy divisions that lobbie like hell to make the internet some kinda gestopo.

I don't think the NSA is going to threaten Silk Road, BlackMarket Reloaded, The Armory etc. Could happen, but I doubt it. Their purpose is to collect information that is needed to protect the security and vital interests of the United States. They will damn sure be interested in navigating Tor, determining the locations of services and decryption. However their focus will be on discovering and preventing terrorist and other plots against the U.S. I expect they will be successful if they have not already. They will be capable of learning information about these market places, however they will not want to share their knowledge with others and will not risk exposing their knowledge to other countries, law enforcement, or politicians and so they will stay clear of confusing their mission unless they discover these services crossing the line into real threat to security of the U.S.

Just my humble opinion, I don't really know.

Sorry for the delay responding. Those are hidden services websites on what is sometimes called the hidden web. Look up onion web or onion url and you can begin to see. Silk Road is an e-Bay like site on the hidden web that sells drugs, Armory sells guns.

Yeah, Tor is one of the most useful programs that SWIM uses. It makes (almost) any drug there is available to anyone who wants them, through bitcoins. Bitcoins are an untraceble, virtual currency that are stored in untraceble BTC wallets. Tor is basically used to disguise the users IP address making it near impossible to track.

Yes, it is pretty interesting, except I cant get over the fact that you are going to have to give your address to somebody and you have no,idea who,they are!

Well... when you send your address to the seller, it is encrypted so no one can read it until the seller decrypts it and sends your product (where it is then automatically deleted completely afterwards). Plus these sites use escrow, so no one has access to the money until you release it to the seller (approving the product). SWIM also only buys from sellers with Positive feedback... just like ebay! SWIM has never had a bad experience ordering off these sites, and would hate it if the government takes over it!

It's not protecting us from terrorists... that's always the excuse! They only want in to catch druggies, and sites that are leaking government files (WikiLeaks uses Tor on the surface web aswell). Shutting it down wouldn't make the public any safer.

The seller knowing is the problem. The seller knows something critical about me, and I know nothing about him. This is a big problem and the reason why I would be foolish to participate. Right? I mean, how do I know who I just sent my address to? Yet they know where I am and what I am up to. The TOR is very interesting and I like the Silk Road concept, but I think it is still safer to buy on the street .... maybe not for me personally, but damn sure safer for those I live with.
