nitrogen smells like ammonia

 What is the source of the nitrogen? If it's ammoniacal, then you'd sort of expect it to have a smell. Diluted you should be alright. Chemical expression of ammonia is NH3 +/- (I can't remember the exact charge, and there are differing forms as well).

In aquaria, that is then oxidized via aerobic bacterial action (Nitrosomonas spp. ) into nitrite, and then again into nitrate. Then, if you have a well-established "system" (natural or otherwise) that has anaerobic areas with contact, then anaerobic bacteria then convert the nitrate into its component parts, which include inert nitrogen. :) In other words, at worst you've watered your plants with pee.

im not sure, but i would bet that the nitrogen is from ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) . that would explain why it smelled like ammonia and is a source of nitrogen.

ok i did a search on ammonium nitrate and heres what i found on the internet:

Use in fertilizer

The highly water-soluble salt is the preferred nitrogen source of fertilizers. Most of the produced ammonium nitrate ends therefore in the production of fertilizers. However, the runoff of excess ammonium nitrate is a leading source of environmental waste.

you shouldnt have any problems as long as you follow directions. but dont listen to me you know more what your doing than i do :).

hopefully i was helping a little... i dont want to tell him some shit that is completely wrong. but with my basic chemistry knowledge i think that ammonium nitrate is just a simple source of nitrogen and should be just fine for your plants. now, dont go and pour ammonia on them! that doesnt have any nitrogen and will be bad for them

i'll put it in simpler terms ...........

does anyone else's nitrogen smell like amomnia?

i posted a link to exactly what i'm using but everyone just asked the source so........

jump up real quick and run over and smell your nitrogen. what does it smell like?

thank you. :)

I'm not sure about Nitrogen, but with age, some chemicals get protonated (Get H's on them). Thats why ether explodes if you keep it over time. The nitrogen might have gotten protonated and become NH3 (ammonia) since it is a year old, and thats the smell you smell.

I make compost, and i know if it smells like ammonia then it is too rich in nitrogen, i have to add more "brown" material.
That is organic 16-0-0 concentrate right. Organic nitrogen smells like ammonia. is it just the concentrate that smells? how bout when you made your solution, still smell?

aaaaaaah, knowledge. tastes good. thank you.

i have been using it for 2 months. a little foliar feeding. today i started mixing 5 gallon buckets of it and it just smelled really strong. it could have always smelled like this. i was simply wondering if others smelled the same thing in there product. maybe it has gone bad. :blsmoke::peace:

I think you'll be alright, Nitrogen does smell ammonia so youre good. Well at least organic stuff does. Thats the stuff you used to make youre tree fort for last year eh. I remember seeing youre shovel in one of the pics beside the hole you dug for it. Still using that old thing? Pure Nitro, Guess it works cuz man that tree was huge.

that don't make it anymore. i was lucky enough to be gifted a gallon of the veg and bloom last fall. i just opened them both about 2 months ago. the bloom was separate and took three days to remix. the veg looked ok but today it just smelled strong. like i said they don't make it and i love it so i'm kinda beatin' myself up on what to do. i guess i'll know if they are dead tomorrow.
