Hey all, i posted in another topic so i decided to repost this here.
Im a first timer in the growing dept. Ive decided to try an indoor cabinet setup using a sterlite cab like in this picture. I want to grow 1-2 plants if im lucky enough to get girls. Im growing bagseed from a dank batch i came upon a while back. Waiting for germination. Are or have any of you used a plastic cabinet like this to grow in? Im going to try soil first and go from there. I have read the grow faq but i like to read different opinions on how to do this. I will be using cfls just not sure on how many and what size.
Do i need to vent this cabinet? will a small oscilating fan be ok with just 2 plants? And will odor be a problem with just 2 plants

I understand that i need to make the inside white instead of the beige plastic color. Will contact paper work?

I know the cab must be sealed from light escaping. If anyone has used this type of setup what did you use to seal the doors?

I want to use this cab for the complete process from beginning to end
any help or advice is greatly appreciated

THANKS!

yes you will need to vent it. yes smell will be an issue with 2 plants. yes white paper will work fine. use thin weatherstripping all the way around to seal the doors. should be fine with 8-10 26w or higher cfls. not all of those will be neccessary for veg. remember 6500k for veg and 2700k for flower. The walls on those cabs are so thin youll want to have the cab itself in a dark place to be sure theres no ambient light getting in during dark time. if you take the shelves out and stand inside the cab with the light on in the room its in youll see what i mean. light comes right through those things. it will work its just paying attention to the details.

thank you. The room that its in is dark in the daytime so it should be ok. As for the vent ive made a carbon filter i just havent decided where to place it so it isnt out in the open. So i need more light during the veg stage and less during the flowering? I appreciate your help. my cabinet is a little bit different than the one in the pic. Its pretty thick. I was hoping to get away with using multiple lights, really wanted to keep it to one or two stout cfls. But ill look around and see what i can find.

okkkk yes you must vent it. its not very hard. an easy way is to just cut two holes in it and buy two fans, then point one that faces in (you want the air to jostle the plants a bit but not too much, this helps the stem get fat an it wont break as easy) then you place another one on the opposite side and have it blowing the air out. and bro 1 plant will stink up your house ESP when it flowers. there are many ways to combat the odor, read the faq there are alot of great ideas but if you want to spend as little as possible just go to the store and buy some arm an hammer and place it in your grow area, and put 1 or two air fresheners outside of it. you dont need to worry about letting light escape the cabinet so much as you want to keep light out when it is in its dark time, its important that its pitch black. what you can do instead of painting the cabinet is to just tape tinfoil all around it. imo its better than paint. tinfoil will also help keep light out and you should be all set. goodluck and have fun. remember DONT overthink things, the simplest methods are moreoften than not the best.

hey- my first post on here. hooray! one or two (even stout) CFLs might not do the trick. maybe if you get 2 42W CFLs in 6500k, that might get you through veg. but for flower, i strongly reccomend this setup.

thanks all! and congrats on ur first post goldengraham. what type of fixture setup is that? and what will that set me back?

Ok so venting is a must, so i need an intake vent and an exhaust vent so therefore i need to put my filter at the exhaust point. No problem there, i can put a fan inside the cabinet to blow on the plants. Sealing the cabinet will be no problem as well.
I really appreciate you all for the help of a rookie lol

GoldenGraham do you have yahoo or anything id like more info on your light setup

Peace

sterma is right about the vents. if you have the space i would kiddie-corner the cab so your carbon filter can stick out the back of the cab. remember that hot air rises. you want your intake low to bring in cool air and your exhaust high up to let out the hot air produced by the lights. you really will definately need more than 2 cfl's for flower if you want any kind of decent yield. 3 months is a long time to waste for a couple grams. I would strongly recommend you stay away from the tinfoil however. It can cause serious hot spots and burn you babies. Mylar or cheap emergency blankets ($2.00 ea camping section at walmart) reflect alot more light without the hotspots. For lighting (if you dont want to go into wirring and all that)you can suspend a couple power strips from the cieling (use some s hooks and chain so its adjustable for hieght)and get some of the sockets that plug right into the power strip (about $1.00 ea at wally world) and then the "y" sockets you see in goldengrams pic (about $1.50 at wally world) allow you to screw in 2 bulbs for every 1 socket. good luck to you whatever you decide to do. Hope you realize your getting into a very addictive hobby!!!! You'll have plenty of time to adjust things as you go and make small improvements as you see fit.

ok, in order:
1. those are 3-bulb vanity fixtures with Y-splitters in each socket.
2. each fixture was 9.99 at menards. the splitters were 1.29 at menards. an individual grounded power cord is 6.99.
3. while we're on the subject, it looks as if you're planning a setup similar to miner . i grow in a wooden wardrobe, converted to fit my needs. since you're talking exhaust, i use a 6" 250cfm inline duct fan at the top of my cab, with an intake hole at the bottom. the fan was 29.99 at menards. overkill for my/our needs, but there can't be enough fresh air for my girls.
4. yes i do have yahoo. my id is same as my username here. also, i'm more often on cannabis.com and reading through my posts there may help you out.
best of luck and add me if you'd like on yahoo.
