Hello there in getting ready to start an indoor grow inna 4x4 grow tent . Ide like to use leds but I have never before. First question: is there such thing as too big if a led light for a space?

You've come to the right place. Well to big for 4x4 nope. Look at cob grow lights utilizing vero29 or Cree cxb series LEDs. This is just a start.

Anything beyond 1500 umol/s/m^2 is generally considered to be overkill for cultivating cannabis. The 'ideal' range is still a topic of much debate.

Yeah and for a 4x4 you'll be hard pressed to find a single fixture to be overkill. What is your budget?

Well I dont wanna spend a lot and I know that will atm be my down fall ... Plus ik ya get what you pay for, but I found a 1200w led for $350. I really want to try it ... And the setup I was looking at comes with a 600 so why not test out a 1200 led in place of a 600 m/h hps. But 4x4 is all I have space for and I really need to save on power..... I'll post a link to this light later on......

He asked how much would be overkill. Anything north of 1kw using vero or cxb emitters is going to be overkill for the average person unless your driving them balls to the wall.

I would skip it. Look at optic grow lights. Honestly you can not illuminate a 4x4 properly with a sub 400 dollar led. Look to spend at least 1200. Just being honest

You're wasting your money, if you are going to buy those LEDs off those company besides Apache. Should make a thread, with bold style writing on it - Buy only CREE CXA/CXB, VEROs or Pre-built by A51.

I have only tried Cree CXA & CXB with MEANWELL DRIVER HLG-185-C700A/B.


Consumers must understand, that Apache LEDS company will put some money on top of their product.. To make back their cost price for their products & also some profit... I don't think it is a small amount of profit, most likely big amounts.

So you're better off DIY a CREE/VERO build.

I have already spent over $1500-1800 for my setup. Lucky I bought it couple months ago. Right now If i was to look at building another CREE/VERO, my cost price will be 1.5X now. USD currency going to high, which isn't great.

Garbage! Any light you see falsely advertise the wattage as the sum of the LEDs full power potential is usually garbage. i.e. 1200w but only draws 400watts. This type of advertising has giving a huge black eye to the really output of LEDs. That 1200 watt # has nothing to do with the light and if those chip are ran at that wattage they wouldn't last long at all. So that light is only 400 watts of poor quality leds and drivers. In most cases, drivers will fail before your second harvest.

This is my first time writing. I see that you guys are very helpful, my question is: Can I grow with this LED Reflector 150 w but the guy at the store says that it produces the same light as 1200 watt HPS ! Does anyone know something about this ? Is it good to start growing with it, it cost much more but it is more cheap for the electricity bill.ref.jpg Please let me know anything about this.

If a 1200w HPS is 35% efficient then it's putting out 420 watts of light. It's impossible for a 150 watt anything to put out 420 watts of light.

It's possible that LED is less efficient than HID. Would seriously avoid it, and the guy at the store is floating you some serious bull shit.

Stay with HID, these LEDs are over priced and really not worth it. COB's might be worth it in a few years but they are barely more efficient than HPS and their cost is redic. This move to white LEDs is the whole issue, white LEDs have low efficiency compared to the other colors they were using (blue I believe is one of the most efficient). So until they get more price competitive and more efficient I wouldn't buy them.

I'll agree on the pricing. HID lamps are much more cost effective. Doubtful one would ever recover the price of a 65% efficient cxb panel on electrical savings alone. If your motivation is to save money in the short term then you're looking in the wrong spot.

I'd argue that led panels, especially latest cob generation, are one of the best lighting technologies available for growing plants. The data isn't quite there to support that, but I think the average person can probably grow a better crop using the latest generation of cobs compared to hps. Time will tell as the tech starts getting adopted more widely.

My opinion on the matter.

HPS can be up to mid 40s on efficiency(I think the duel ended gavitas pretty competitive and much more powerful than any LED on market.) and I highly doubt you will get 62% in a real world application unless you under drive the LEDs so much they barely push light out(which makes the price tag go up more since you will need more COB's and drivers to cover the same area as harder driven LEDs).

Not quite. You are taking the numbers of the bulb. Well show me a reflector that is 80% efficient. Gavitas reflector is 70%-75%. So what was 2100 umol is now 1400-1500. And no it doesn't take 5 grand worth of cobs to produce that. I have a light that's 1/3 that and is air cooled and I'll put it head to head with a gavita all day.
