new sprouts please help!

hi i recently added seeds to a shot glass full of water and left them in a warm dark place for 24 hours then planted them pretty shallow in some soil.

after a day or two they sprouted with a white shoot and the seed on the top.

is this normal or should i plant the white sprout as a root? or will it develop and stand up on its own?

It sounds like you may have planted too shallow, or the medium is too hard/compact, if they aren't standing up on their own.

What kind of lighting do you have? It's common for the seed casing to still be attached when they sprout, but it should be growing up towards the light. Pics would help.

its kinda on the downlow a bit of a stealth operation but im planning to use an incasdecent plus the help of the sun coming through the windows.

as you can see in the pic ther is a white sprout thats emerged and is sorta lying on its side and stuff my webcams too old to see much detail but there is a seed casing on the end of the new shoot.

come monday ill have it under a light of some description so hopefully it will just pick up and grow into something kool.

i have since repotted into a much looser soil and it seems a lot happier its standing on its own.

i also think i had the soil too wet so i was careful not to overwater this time.

Don't use an incandesent bulb!! If anything use a CFL light. Those spiral lights work amazing and can screw into any socket.

ok, im on a tight budget but i will go to the supermarket tomorrow and see if i can find something better

i found something in one of our light sockets will this be any better?

does anyone know how long it takes for a new sprout to develop leaves after its broken the surface?

its taking its time but the first two 'false leaves' i think they are are starting to show hopefully it speeds up a bit soon.

you may notice i have it in a clear jar but im gunna tape it up with some insulation tape and eventually get them into a decent pot

this is pretty kool i can see a proper leaf starting in between the split in the stem, very exciting time!

ohk so i f***ed up, i dropped my cfl on the stem and it broke at the bottom. i replanted it and it seems to be alright.

will it root again or what?

good news, if you snap your sprout you can replant it and it will probably survive, mine did!

yeah thats what im usin', i got two cfls for like 10 bucks nzd.

your not growing in your parents house are you?

thats exactly what im doing, i just hide it in a computer case when they are home lol
