I figure it takes wattage to create lumens and they're all related. T5's don't come with a ballast, cfl's are equipped with a built in digi ballast. Spectrum is what is most important and daylight spectrum's what you want for veggin'

The more lumens, with the right spectrums, with temp control is key... And it doesn't necessarily take more wattage to produce more lumens... All depends on your choice of lighting... Which halogens should NEVER be one of the ones on that list...

hey everybody my plants are definitely growing rather slow (not a light thing) they grew up after the transplant a little but now seem to be very slow, i'm in day 8 after plantation of germinated seeds, I also noticed that their color isn't as dark as it should be, what should i do? nuting ? I read it might come of a little violent this early . PLEASE ADVISE.!!

they appear a tad darker in the photos

I know it sucks to wait.
Their cotyledons are not yellow. No need to feed them. Too early for that.
Wait for them build a nice root system and they'll take care of the rest.
In like 2 to 3 weeks You'll see the difference.

here's a pic update, I had to burry some of the soil to compensate for the extra length, I believe the plants are Sativa now (they got longer profiles). Also I Broke my rule which consisted of not spending much money on the project and see what I can get for almost close to no spending, I now have the 4 seedlings (can I still call them that ?) got the fixtures for lamps blus 2 cable extenders, plus a bottle of nutes + metal wires for building practical reflector and doing some LST if my plants make it to that stage (how early can I start), under 8250 lumens of lights (6500k ) which I also leave on during direct sunshine hours to add up to 18,000 Lm say 15,000 given that this is not perfection, most of the pics I see here or elsewhere have large robust stems hence me believing the plants to be Sativa.

It would be nice If I could get more answers from you readers as judging from the thread view count I get the feeling most of the questions (such in this reply) I ask come off as rhetorical whereas I need answers for them , thanks

day 10, kinda slow right ?

I got 120w on about a square foot, could be genetics, will do at week 4 or 5 with the nutes, i'll just wait, to compensate I just repotted them with high quality soil (more like expensive soil) organic %85 mater its german, take a look at the pic for some info (everybody is welcome to contribute )

here a pic of my setup but thats during the day so they get light+sunshine. plants are at day 11 looking healthy but growing realllll slow !

aeration is good
humidity and co2 not so much !

a problem has arised, today I noticed these two yellow brown spot (I beleive necrosis as the area has flattened ) what is this ??!

now 6 hours later the spots have increased in size and there is a larger area around looking ready to follow, theyre in a good soil on day 14 so i dont think thats a nutes thing

i think to be honest when its dark rust coloured spots its a lack of phosphorus. not 100% though.

Correct... Even in veg, they need P... It will really become evident in flowering if it isn't getting enough P, and micronute defs like CA and MG will also fuck up an otherwise awesome crop, unless treated with sum dol. lime right away, too...

Some Espoma Flower-tone 3-4-5 should give u pla=enty of the macro's for vegging, along with some N-rich guano, and worm castings... Then u can continue the Flower-tone, and begin dialing down the N, and giving it mor P-rich shit like rock phosphate, bone meal, P-rich guano, etc... Itz always good to have a well-balanced mix of perlite, vermiculite, greensand, dol. lime, a dash of epsom salt, peat moss, cotton burr, coco coir, etc, all in a good-organic soil(not MG), and even have a layer of pea gravel on the bottom of your containers, to aid in drainage, as well...

thanks for the advice, but what if it isnt a nute deficiency thing ? i mean its been in this rich soil for only a week and its such a tiny plant no way it could have consumed all the NPK.
could it be a ph problem ?, i used bottled water with a ph of 7.8 ! I wateredaround 1.5 (one point five) times during last week since i put them in this soil

here's a little update.

View attachment 2135609 View attachment 2135607 View attachment 2135608

those were taken yesterday, the one that was slightly suffering is at the top, its doing much better after i transplanted it to a less richer soil and cut the two bad leaves. but it doesnt prove anything coz the other 3 didnt get those spots.

i'm at day 24, they are growing slowly , still under 5 24 wcfls,

would an hps actually boost the speed from seedling stage to harvest ? I read it in Cervantes' book it actually slightly extends it but ends up yielding more anyone can confirm ? time is an issue.

photo update:

day 27

so far they have been under 5x 24w CFL's totaling 140w/8500lm.
as of today i'm adding an extra bulb 150w/9000 lumens to get to 17000 lm! its a fat one i'm having a hard time fixing it
they started smelling like mj ! very very lemony , the funny thing is that im probably never gonna know what strain they r
IMG_0762.jpgIMG_0773.jpgIMG_0775.jpg
guys it would be helpful if you could have a guess as to what that belowmight , the 2nd pic offers a clear symptom for identification by pro's i feel
IMG_0763.jpg IMG_0765.jpg
no nutting so far soil is good (a little compact ) and i'm pretty sure its not ph , im starting nuttes on week 5 or day 35

laters !

i think i might've resolved the bottom leaves yellowing, after i bottom fed them, and trimmed the dead parts it didnt progapage much, i'm officially feeding them later today, i'm thinkin of doing that to hald of them to see how they react to my 8-7-7.

pinched 1 of em for experimenting 2 days ago ! but i'm not liking as nothing came out yet, not even a tiny thing, i hope i didnt do it wrong, but it was the very top growth

its been the watering that was causing all the trouble, there are 2 levels to the root ball now, the core one consists of that supposedly awesome soil that i got ! it compacts unbelievably and its almost impossible to get wet , when i wet it it reacts exactly as when a droplet of water hits the sand, its encapsulated and never goes beyond the surface, in the pot all the water goes through the sides and it is then that it gets to the proximities of the outer root ball where the roots get their water from ! big big mistake not to have mixed it with pearlite !

i'm also thinkin that my plants get thirsty extremely fast because of 3 more reasons:
1-humidity, its so low, even bananas shrink in 3 days !!! in the US when i hang a wet towel in my room its takes ages to dry, here a soaked wet pair of jeans gets dry in NO TIME !

2- the water that gets absorbed from the outer core of the root ball has a hard time traveling through the very dry area of the inner root ball , a true noob mistake

3- and finally they are under a wide a/c opening that blows on them 24/7

on a brighter note i finally got my 400w hps, i got it at a crazy awesome price too bulb, ballast, socket, wires etc for ........ 33 dollars !!! i still cant believe , i bought it from a wholesaler who charged me a wholesale price for a single unit, that was nice of him,

i also got a reflector online from a crooky website called magiplant.net (turkish) now that wasnt such a nice price i payed for a crappy reflector (really basic and crappy),and a kilog of powdered dolomite, shipping+on location payment, more than i payed for the other stuff !

8/9 more days of veggin and onto 12/12

bulb is basic sylvania 400w(43k lm i think) cap to show u how tiny the ballast is(totally silent)
last picture is the toped plant,i assume even if the top didnt come out the way i want it should help it to bush out some more.
