New Glass bowl question.

Ok...so I broke down and bought a sweet double blown glass bowl. I've always smoked from a brass bowl with a screen. Do I use a screen in a glass bowl? It appears that I could just throw a small nug in and fire away...do you guys still put in a screen? Sorry to be dense on this one...again, I've never owned one before. Glass seems safer to me then brass too, not sure if metal can leech into my lungs and cause problems. Any comments would be welcome. Thanks!

Not sure...that's what the guy said when I bought it...they had triple blown for $75...too much$$ for me to spend. I think the glass was doubled up for strength.

If you are going to use a screen get a glass screen or glass gauze. Just ask your head shop - they will have them. Pretty cheap too.

I can't hit a spoon as smoothly as FDD so I use a glass screen.

Try it without a screen first, odds are you won't need it, if you suck massive amounts of bud or ash, they make glass screens that look like a small tripod, you put them in tip down.

Double blown seems to mean inside out or sleeved... as opposed to a thin, cheap piece with a little bit of color on the surface. It is a strange name for it though, because that stuff isn't really double blown IMO. I've done stuff where I've done a pattern on the glass, completely melted everything in smooth, twisted it up, then added a 2nd layer of color pattern and clear, then melted that all in and formed it. That seems like the sort of thing that would be called double blown. That, or a blow in sort of thing. Oh well, they can call it whatever they want. Either way, thicker will hold up better generally.

no, no screen.

what is "double blown"?
Theres a lot of people that use the term double blown or even triple blown....Its just the thickness of the glass, headshops started saying terms like this because most places are unsure of the thickness, they dont know if its 3mm or 7mm most of the time.

So if someone says its a double blown glass bowl, that means its around 4mm thick, see what im sayin?

A quick google search showed pretty much what xX said... something that shop owners say to describe thickness. Not surprising - I've met shop owners who didn't have much understanding of the process. I've brought in things that took a ton of work and had a bunch of detail in the designs, and they had a hard time understanding why it should cost more than wrap and rake.
Maybe it really means something else though... I'm too lazy to search around, and don't care too much anyway.

ok...i found out last night the just throwing a little bud in won't work...I need a grinder. The nug got stuck as I was hitting and was really hard to draw on...I was all over the carb just to get air to breathe.
