New Electrical Panel? Setup of a new warehouse setup, PLEASE HELP!

if you have 15K of lights at what voltage 240 I assume .

is the electrical supply 3 phase or single phase/

I am a master electrician wth over 30 years in the field.

all this makes a huge difference.

Too bad you're not near northern Colorado, I'd have a lot of work for you.

The electrician I was referred to quoted me $5500 to upgrade the sub panel to 200amp and run new thicker gauge wiring to my grow room. Is this a good price?

Heres the pics of the panel etc, does anyone know my max possible lights with the existing setup?
Sehnsee, That is a 4 wire 3 phase System @ 120-480 volts. That means it carries its own neutral wire and you have the option of using equipment from 120v up to 480v. Look for your main disconnect. I need to know the amps on that.

yeah I agree lots of trouble with that wild 180ish voltage leg but if it is the commercial service you have available you have to deal with it.

i was wondering your w/ft2 gives you about 400 ft/2 prime real estate

well with out a service calculation you will be limited. probably to the max size lugs on the load size of the meter base.

open up your main panel and post a pic of the mains as well as main breaker size (if you have one as the panel may be main lug only) it looks as though you might have access to a 3 phase system.

Look for wire sizes and let me know if its copper or aluminum

I live in CO and my boss rents a space to a commercial grow, it is a 10K sq ft space and they upgraded to a 400 amp service for 50K the electric co did it

Put it this way, our electrician installed a 15kv transformer, three separate panels, wired three separate rooms with a shit load of outlets, installed emergency exit signs, and I think it was 9k total.

DEFINATELY GET AT LEAST 3 BIDS!!!

Our first bid was 24k, then one for 17k, then one guy we asked "your kind of a dick aren't you?, and the 4th guy who was 9k and has been absolutely awesome to work with.

because you can divide the 15,000 by 359.84 rather than 240 for your lighting calculation that is the load on your service entrance conductors. 41.685.A considering your load is balanced.

that is you are distributing the load evenly across 3 phases rather than 2.

Btw.. a three phase panel should not be more than 3-4 hundred.

In terms of wiring everything... if your not pulling permits then do that shit yourself!!

3 phase, balancing loads, and transformers are no joke. But running wires, putting in outlets, building timers... that shit is clown town easy.

Even approved termination methods can prove inadequate and breakdown with sustained heavy use or time. Some approved methodologies and equipment have been judged inadequate (like some sylvania zinsco panels (although yours looks like a later updated version.)

It depends on the rating and voltage of the supply.
We have a 60 amp 600v service, with a 45kva transformer stepping down to 120/208 into a 3ph 225amp panel. we are running 34 1000w lights this very moment, a 36,000 btu a/c, a 14,000 btu a/c, 4 10 inch inline fans, 2 12 inch inline fans, like 18 wall fans, pumps, 6x 4' 4 lamp t5's...fridge, cameras, security system, hallway lighting exit signs..we do pull close to 50 amps at times on the primary side, when all the lights and both a/c's are on.
70amps at 240v on the secondary side of the xformer is a lot different than a 70 amp 600v service...~16,800w vs ~42,000w and usually services are labelled based on the the primary side over current rating of the supply conductors to the building so that needs to be clarified for us.
Also more info on the rating of that main service entrance panel would help. Is the transformer on a pole outside or is there one in the building?

Regardless, if you have 3 phase 480 or 600 coming in, even if that meter is only good for 70 amp, you would be able to simply ditch the small sub panel, upgrade the main panel to a 225 amp or something in that neighborhood.

Say that meter is only rated for 70 amp, but you have a 3 phase 480 or 600v supply.

70a x 480v = 33,600 watts
70a x 600v = 42,000 watts.
Not quite that simple but it illustrates the point.
Seems to me that the service, if it is 480 or even better 600v is adequate for 15k, easily, with enough room for some a/c, fans etc. It's just that main panel will probably need to be upgraded and I'd just ditch the sub panel.
