New Discovery... Life On Other Planets In Our Galaxy??

Just though it was very exciting news...even though I have always believed that there is life out there, their has never been any concrete evidence to prove such claims, now it seems we are closer than ever....I found this interesting article about Nasa's new discoveries

The announcement Wednesday by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory details one of the most important astronomical discoveries ever: scientists using the Kepler orbiting telescope have found indications that planets are abundant in our galaxy and many —- including Earth-size planets —- are in their stars' habitable zone.

What does it mean? I'll stick my neck out and say it: we are not alone. We can't be, with these odds.

Press releases by JPL, Pasadena, said Kepler has discovered hundreds of new planet candidates, ranging in size from close to Earth's to giants larger than Jupiter, and in density anywhere from that of polystyrene foam used in beverage cups, to iron. Sixty-eight of these are about Earth size, the first such exoplanets ever found.

The habitable zone is the region that's far enough from a star that liquid water wouldn't boil off, yet close enough to its warmth that an ocean wouldn't freeze -- In other words, neither too hot nor cold for life as practiced on Earth.

A caveat: the new findings are only candidate planets, which still must be verified. More studies, gathering further information as planets continue to eclipse their host stars, are needed. But the indications are good.

Since March 2009, Kepler has been examining 156,000 stars in the same small section of the Milky Way Galaxy — a patch making up only about 1/400 of the sky.

[A chart provided by NASA of the star field that Kepler is examining, in the Cygnus-Lyra region of the milky way. This area is dense with stars. The split squares represent the telescope's sensors]

The telescope is so sensitive that it can detect the tiny drop in a star's light when a planet comes between it and Kepler. For an Earth-size planet, that could be a decrease of only 0.01 percent of a star's already feeble light.

Several transits of the star are needed to prove the presence of a planet. The Kepler team has verified 15 exoplanets in the past.

Nearly as exciting as the discovery of possible planets the size of our own pipsqueak is that 54 planet-candidates of all sizes are in their stars' habitable zones. "Some candidates could even have moons with liquid water," said William Borucki, the Kepler project's science principal investigator.

Quoted in a NASA press release, he added, "Five of the planetary candidates are both Earth-size and orbit in the habitable zone of their parent stars."

So far Kepler has noted 1,235 potential planets. Most of them, Borucki said, "I'm convinced, will be confirmed as planets in the coming months and years."

[A by NASA illustration of candidate planets found by Kepler within its small study region. It shows Earth-size planets scattered throughout the field]

Kepler's candidates include, in addition to the 68 Earth-size planets, 288 super-Earth-size, up to twice our planet's mass; 662 the size of Neptune; 165 the size of Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system, and 19 that are larger than Jupiter.

In the habitable zone, five are close to the size of Earth, with the 49 others varying from super-Earth-size to larger than Jupiter.

Additionally, 170 of the candidates show evidence of being in multiple-planet star systems, according to NASA. The system dubbed Kepler 11, about 2,000 light-years away, apparently has at least six planets. They are tightly bunched, all of them closer to their star than Venus is to the sun; five of them have orbits that are smaller than Mercury's, the closest to the sun.

The release quotes Borucki: "The fact that we've found so many planet candidates in such a tiny fraction of the sky suggests there are countless planets orbiting stars like our sun in our galaxy."

After all, the telescope can only find planets that orbit in a direction that happens to bring them in front of the star from our perspective. Because only a small proportion of the sky is part of the survey, and because only a relatively few planets would cross their stars from our viewpoint, he said, "our results indicate there must be millions of planet orbiting the stars that surround our sun."

Patrick Wiggins, a NASA solar system ambassador to Utah, was having dinner Wednesday night in the Denny's Restaurant in Tooele, when "a very elderly, white-haired lady approached." Having recognized him as one of Utah's best-known astronomers, she asked him about the new planets.

"Who says there's no interest in astronomy?" Wiggins told Nightly News.

To him, the results are great and exciting, but not unexpected.

"I've always figured that the eventual discovery of Earth-sized planets was something of a given," he said. Now he is anticipating the discovery of planets that are confirmed to be Earth-like —- that is, actually habitable.

"Today's announcement was one more important step along that journey."

"In one generation we have gone from extraterrestrial planets being a mainstay of science fiction, to the present, where Kepler has helped turn science fiction into today's reality," a NASA release quotes Charles Bolden, administrator of the agency.

Jay Eads, a Kearns teacher, amateur astronomer and astronomy blogger, said the ramifications would apply not only to our own galaxy but to the great Andromeda Galaxy "and all the other spiral galaxies that are out there (we'll bypass the elliptical galaxies for now). …

"To assume we are alone in the universe is something I can no longer agree with. I find it far more likely that there is intelligent life out there in the universe, than there is not. Doesn't mean we get to meet them, but I'm sure they are out there."

Eads concluded, "It's an exciting time to be alive."

Well I hope they fire the NASA officals in charge of this kind of shit, obama wants them telling the muslims how great they are to the space program. As far as aliens leave the bastards in outer space we got more shit we can't get rid of here already.

Oh shit did I step in it.

Who are we to say there is EVEN SUCH THING AS A "HABITABLE" zone. whos to say some species didnt evolve to survive in -200+ celcius. or to survive in 200+ celcius.

how do we know for certain all living things need water and air, yeh everything on Earth needs water and air, but we evolved that way, we evlolved to our surrounding. we all started off as micro-organisms. so what if a micro-organism began on a waterless planet, +200 celcius, they would take a completely different evolutionary path then what we have taken.

how do you know mars, or venus isnt full of life. NASA probably discovered thousands of species in outer-space. some might actually be intellegent. but nothing significant will ever make it out to the public.

It is IMPOSSIBLE that we are the only creatures. Roswell was proof to the world. they recovered intellgent alien species from a "UFO" crash site. they obviously covered everything up. there are so many witnesses that came out to talk (masking their identitiy) because the government made death threats to them, if they spoke the truth, their families are dead...thats your government. so to think any of their major discoveries would be revealed to the public is idiotic. if you guys revolted against your government, and got your hands on all the "classified" documents, and you saw the truth for yourselfs. The Human population would completely overthrow, and murder their governments.

The truth about what actually happens on this planet, and how it is controlled / run, is absolutely appauling. it is a consipracy so big, people cant accept it, which is exactly what they want. Because if people did find out, and accepted it, they know they'd be fucked. the world would go into revolt against the powers controlling this world.

I'm not trying to get into all these conspiracy theories...I myself am aware of what your speaking of.....I am just trying to share some information I thought was exciting...even though I am certain there are individuals that are far more informed than the general public about how much we really know about the universe and other matters I thought it was interesting.....and I agree with you on us not knowing how and what life can and can't exist since there is a lot we don't know about how the universe works but these planets are somewhat like ours and probably the closest life forms that may be somewhat relative to our species or at the least those plants are habitable for man to explore.....

It is man nature to explore the unknown so to say leave aliens alone is like to tell man not be human.......highly unlikely.......but to each his own my friend...

NASA searches for things we know to exist. Best example is water. Why do scientists look so hard to find water on other planets? They know that if they find liquid water, there is a good chance of finding life. They also believe, and study and research the fuck out of, organisms can and do evolve in things other than water, for instance the liquid chemical on Titan, I think it's methane, but I'm not 100%.

The "habitable zone" is consistent with what life on Earth required to evolve. So if there are other planets in this zone in accordance with their parent star, and they're the right size, that significantly increases the chances of life (as we may know it).

We know Mars or Venus aren't teeming with life because we've sent probes to both of those planets and have taken samples of their soils. Venus is too hot, Mars is too cold, neither have sufficient amounts of liquid water to sustain life. At one time, Mars may have had life, that's why that planet is so interesting. The search continues.

Roswell - aliens from another solar system developed the technology to traverse the void of space only to crash land on Earth when they arrived? Doesn't that sound a little bit far fetched to you?

I recently read an article in the wall street journal which talked of discovering other planets and new stars that lie inside our galaxy-http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703399204576108120997951228.html . It's a very good article if your genuinely interested in the study of outer-space. My personal belief is the universe is infinite and there much be some other intelligent life out there, but in the milky way galaxy I am not sure. There are Billions of galaxies out there, but as for the milky way galaxy I believe we are the only intelligent life and I'm sure some people would disagree. I have studied Astronomy my whole life and I know in my mind there is other life out there but my personal belief is that it exists outside our galaxy. I believe Stephen Hawking touched on this subject in many of his speeches I remember he once said he is almost certain there is intelligent life in space but we should not seek it because it is likely to be hostile. Sorry if I rambled on too long it's just this is a topic I have studied for a long time

We've gone more than 52 times faster than the speed of sound in space.

No offenses intended, or to be taken please trublue; but Stephen Hawking's and his hostile theory is for left brained thinkers, and grossly naive at best.

We, including myself, live cluelessly more often than we wish to believe.

We still can’t even use more than 10 % of our own brains, much less explore the full depths of our own oceans enough to accurately identify and categorize all of the actual life forms on our own planet... Much less agree on which theory we created as to how we got here to begin with...

The Dogon tribe of Africa might be a closer to truth than the volumes of idiocracies we've compiled for our own, which we call ironically "higher learning educations" and pushed down our throats within our own societies built upon these personal delusions gone worldly viral.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjDIrFNPLIs

Research this tribe with no written languages and see if our scientists are as smart as a people using none of our modern technologies. They still carry spears and live a hunter gather lifestyle.

They also knew Sirius b was made of the heaviest matter in the universe, and perfectly recreated its 50 yr trajectory orbit of a timeframe in our 1900’s on their walls thousands of years ago!!! This star wasn’t "discovered" by our smarty-pants dr.s until we built a telescope powerful enough to see it a few decades ago. Go figure...

We also once blindly said nothing can live miles down in our own oceans, yet behold, when we built a submersible to partially explore it, we found entire ecosystems of life to baffle ourselves with for decades yet to come...

Billions of galaxies worth of stuff we cannot explore due to our own personal limitations and morphically constructed realities...

Getting any degree in someone else’s theories and logic only propels our personal status from jackass, to dr. jackass to support our own dignity and fabricated sense of self worth.

can anyone tell me why no flamed torch mark's are found in any of the pyramids built thousands of years ago?
Did the workers create and always walk through these perfect structures in the dark?

Heres another baffler for ya- Today’s modern equipment would require 21 heavy load cranes to move each stone into place, could any amount of manpower even accomplish such a feat today?

We know nothing. The sooner we acknowledge this as a species, the sooner we might learn to increase our usable brainpower.

I do diagree with you on the stephen hawkins comment that guy has a lot of knowledge and has awnsered some of the questions we thought were un awnserable. That guy was working out the areas of black holes which were hundreads of thousends of light years away when he was 10 . now thats intelegance :D

ugh... I'll get back to the rest of that later.

PS. we do not only use 10% of our brains. We use 100% of our brain, just not at the same time.

Hawking is highly a intelligent scientist to be sure, moreso than your average bear, and to his tremendous credit.

He has connected more "seemingly/physically realistic" dots than many scientists have before him; but his brain also organizes information into such an "ordered" approach that sometimes it doesnt make much sense given the amount of fabricated variables he inputs into his own equations. Thus my left brain comments, sorry if I offended a few of em out there. Too much left brain usage, sometimes means the right brain is being left out of the entire equation, and grows cobwebs in the process.

Hell, the real rain man as example probably cannot even tie his own shoes, and he literally cannot hold any kind of real job; but he can read two pages at the same time, one with each eye, while retaining 90+% of all of the information he just read. And it only takes him seconds to read both pages at once. He almost lives at the library, as he cannot truly function outside of this single environment.
He has memorized every zip code in the entire USA and every bit of information on every president, and their addresses that ever lived, but cannot function on a daily basis without someone watching him everywhere he goes as so to keep himself out of harms way.

Not all sense equals common sense. And yes, I was speaking about using 100 % of our brains at once, my mistake for my unclarifications of my previous statement.

So to get back to the gifted Hawking, here is an easy question to contemplate on for a few minutes-
Has he personally received death threats from above to fashion such conclusions as to their dismal intentions for us, or is he operating on a probability scale he manufactured to support his desired conlusions?

For that matter, has anyone ever received such death threats of us becoming their worker slaves to buy into such a theory of our demise if we reach out to the unknown?

Another simple question is this:
If aliens can make a billion mile treck across mutiple universes to get here in less than a blink of an eye; should we really be naive enough to think they would need us for anything, much less as a slave race for themselves as Hawking does?

Another:
How does a tribe of non-technical, modern day, literal spear throwing people possess more information about our universe and its stars than your modern "science" professors who have published thousands of so called scholarly materials for us to often delusion ourselves with?

Another mind blower for ya to eventually learn is true from our chosen "science" community; that is, when they catch up:
e does not equal mc squared; and the theory of relativity is not complete.

Research things for yourself, stop accepting the face values others wish to assign upon things.

Remember that when you are confused, it means you are either learning, or stoned.

What really kills me with scientist is this. Everything they do is best guess. Its that simple. Even when they KNOW something its still best guess.

Take the speed of sound. (numbers are wrong.. but still make my point) It took say 100 hp to get to 99% the speed of sound. Make sense that 1 more hp would get you there. But turns out that at that speed there is a barrier we had to cross & instead of 1 more HP to hit the speed of sound they had to give her 200 hp more. Didn't know until we crossed the line.

So, let see, could we find a mouse hiding under the ground in the amazon forest from the United States? prob not.. but we assume there is no life on any other planets, even in our solar system. How the hell do we have any idea what is on Mars? Or any of the other plants. Ok we have probes.. I got that.. but wait. They have scanned like .000001% of the planet.

Come on..

The truth is we know almost nothing about what we claim to understand. Life out there? Who knows, but I am NOT going to be the guy that says no.

Science is just as much about faith as religion.

we cam carbon date items to show how old they are. Carbon X breaks down so fast over time & we can track that & get an age of an item. Now, lets go back to the sound barrier for a sec. we didn't know about the increase in power then, how do we know that carbon maybe breaks down at a certain speed say for 1000 years then it accelerates or slows down? we have no idea unless we can acutally measure it. so that means in reality we can not say anything is older than say 10000 years. we can say it. BUt its best guess..

Same with distance. The only thing we could actually measure would be say anything 35 light years away. Anything more than that is best guess. We shoot a signal at something & time the return. we've had that technology for say 70 years so 35 years to hit the item & 35 for the signal to return. Everything else is best guess. Who knows, maybe after light travels for 50 years it speeds up or slows down or who the fuck know.

Its all good though.. :)

Now, go smoke a bowl baby!! That's not best guess.. A good bowl is reality :)
