Neil Young's PONO

Sometimes I wonder if this is an elaborate joke that Neil Young is playing on us because he is bored with his train sets. A nearly 70 year old rocker who had to go acoustic in his 50's because of severe tinnitus is telling us that recorded music sounds terrible and the solution is buy the most awkwardly shaped portable player imaginable so we can load it up with $25 "high resolution" versions of albums recorded on analog tape.

Sadly I don't think it is a joke. There is a real opportunity for Pono to release music that hasn't had the life crushed out of it by multiband dynamic range compression and massive amounts of peak limiting. However, there hasn't been a peep from them about that, probably because it's politically/financially impossible with anything that's already been released. Even so, we don't need a new player or "high rez" for that.
