Need to build a custom "pot". Ideas for a construction material???

Hey,

So Im nearing the flowering stage for my indoor grow. Today is day 40 and still just waiting on the preflowers before I start 12/12. And I need to be ready.

Im growing steathaly in a custom-built aquarium cabinet with less than 5 cubic feet and have 3 plants going strong. They are currently all in individual terracotta pots and once I have the sexes 100% determined I am planning on doing a final re-pot into a single, custom-built, water-tight container that fits the base-interior of this aquarium stand so they can get the maximum soil-space.

Of course Im praying they will all be girls but even if I just get one female Ill still be able to fill the entire space with buds (SCROG), it will just take more veging time.

So my question for you all is...do any of you have any idea of a material I can use to construct this container? Construction itself is not a problem, Ive got that all figured out, right now it's just WTF do I make this damn thing out of?

I of course want something opaque so the roots stay in the dark.

I would prefer something fairly thin (no thicker than 1/8") so it's easy to work with.

Some ideas Ive had were to cut-up an old trash can or large plastic storage box.

But before I go lurking around the neighborhood at midnight stealing trashcans I thought Id check with you all first and see if you had any better ideas

Here's a rough sketch with dimentions so you all can get an idea of what Im thinking about here. Thanks.

Peace.

I guess you couldnt figure out that I was kidding about stealing them. But thanks for being a wise-ass, hope that's some good bud you're smoking.

Dont worry about it. I know sarcasm is near-impossible to pick-up in writing. But think about it...if anyone would actually use another person's nasty-ass trash can for something like this they've got bigger problems than kleptomania.

good luck with all your future endeavours. :p

I'm not sure that I really understand what you're trying to do with the container you have pic'd...if its for growing, its def too shallow only showing 6" total depth...you need at least 12 inches...
You're much better off doing a DIY DWC bubbler...perfect for small spaces and better than soil

That's not a bad idea. In the meantime, smilies and italics can help note sarcasm if they're used right...like...

No need for a sarcasm tag there! haha.

Yeah, 12" would be great if I had the height. My cabinet is less than 3' tall so a pot more than a 3rd the height would be rather ludicrous. I was able to find a material to use and once the pot's done Ill make a seperate thread in the DIY forum to show how I made it.

I was able to get 2 extra inches of height from the material I found so it's now 8" tall. I calculated it and that gives me almost 7 gallons of space for soil. I may look into aeroponics later. I'll still be able to get some decent bud from this grow.

Thanks for the tips, and for the well-wishes, OldSchoolDJ. Glad there's no hard feelings :)

Peace.

if your looking for cheap, and disposable, i got one for you... when i was growing up in the sticks, and we grew plants on our deck with no pots / planters. we simply cut an X on the side of a bag of soil, and let it grow out of the bag.... surly you could do the same with doubled or tripled black trash bags with your own soil mix.

ye a grow bag would be good frame it with some wood and out an extra layer bag to stop water leakage at the bottom and slighty elevate the bag the plant is in.

Thanks guys, I just might do something like that. I scrapped the pot idea because after building it and sealing it with silicone I discovered that I couldnt get it in the cabinet! Man, was I pissed. I ripped the thing apart and threw it across the room.

I decided to go the cloning route and do a SOG with 15-20 small plants instead of a ScrOG with 3 large ones. I think it will work better this way so it was for the best.

Im still planning on using soil for when the clones are rooted and then I may use the bag idea. I like it.

Personally I would find a storage tote the right size. I recommend Rubbermaid as they are
not leak prone. They also make a 10gal tote that is about 20" x 10" you may be able to squeeze in there.

Another option if your hard core DIY, make the frame out of 1"x2" lumber and use heavy duity plastic can liners to hold soil. dont worry about the 1.5" lip you have on ether side of your grow cab, roots wont make it there anyways.

Sog is a great idea. something else you might consider is DWC, you could keep the setup small (there's sooo many totes to choose from at walmart), and the roots would have plenty of room!!

I hadnt been able to find one just the right size but I will keep looking. I havent checked WalMart yet but I avoid that store like the plauge. Guess I can make an exception this time

I had thought of that too but my obsession with including the lip to get every last square inch of soil space made me scratch the idea. Guess I dont have to worry about it though. Thinking of moving away from soil now though. All the options with hydro are becoming more and more appealing esp for my situation.

Thanks. I may have to go see what they have and hopefully I can find one big one that fits in my cramped cabinet.

How about using 3 smaller ones side by side? That's what Im doing for my clones right now (see the pic). Would they work for a DWC setup? Do you think there would be enough room for the roots? I have about 18 clones at the moment. However 8 of them im 80% sure are males so my final count may be 10 or less (depending on if Im right about the males and how many clones survive)

Using a 150w MH and switching to 150w HPS for flowering in a couple weeks.

u can do DWC in just about anything thats deep enough, just a few inches IMO( depending on the final size of the plant you want). I've done 3gal buckets, 22gal tub, 2gal totes and my latest micro bubbler in tupperware!! Check my sig.. real easy, real cheap... BTW, where would you get male clones from? isn't the whole point of getting clones NOT having males?

Good to know. Ill definitely look more into DWC. Ill check out your sig as soon as I get a chance.

And Im still not sure if they're males yet. The preflowers were still too small to tell for sure so I took clones just in case. Also I may try to do some selective fertilizing to get some seeds from 1 or 2 of the females. May be a bit advanced, but if I fuck up and fertilize all of them by accident, oh well. Just learning, and bud is bud IMO.

Thanks again for the info.

My solution is go out and buy some tin sheets like the ones u place under the burner in your oven. Its the same kind of product as the small circle tins that go under the stove coil burner providing easy clean up and cut a shape out of it. now get a spray adhiesive and stick a large garbage bag to it and fold the box together and use aluminium air ducting tape to go around the outside of the box securing it. pack soil in. round pots are harder to make. buy 4 tin sheets for 3.00 ask a store person
