I just got my seeds in the mail. i ordered a 5 seed pack of alaskan ice from greenhouse and 1 barneys g13 haze. I put them in a wet paper towel and placed the paper towel in a ziplock bag. I let them stay in there for a day and a half so far, and out of 6 seeds only 1 alaskan ice germinated, so i planted it. since only 1 germinated i took the seeds out of the paper towel and put them in a cup full of water hoping they will germ.
Is there anything i can do? What does this mean? other than the fact that i spent 80 bucks on 1 seed.

okay, well, from what i hear... that's not the best way to germinate

but, the way i germinated my seed, is different from letting the seed crack
if you want, you can try the way i did it, it's up to you, but, it worked for me

all you have to do is, grab a shot glass or any small cup
fill the cup up, half way, with bottled water/filtered/tap water

(if you use tap, let it sit out for 24-30 hours, before use)
after you have your cup filled, drop your seed in the cup
the seed will float, put it in a completely dark area
(cover it up, with a shoebox, bigger cup ect)
let it sit & float in the water for about a day or two
check on it after a day though, if it's still floating
stick your finger in the cup & mix the water around
& if the seed doesn't sink, cover it up & check on it a day later
once the seed has sunk to the bottom of the cup
take the seed out with tweezers, never your hands/fingers
& plant it in your soil, knot side up & water your soil thoroughly

then, just wait for the magic to happen :)

good luck

I would do it without the zip-lock bag from now on. I've never done it that way. It just doesn't seem like a very healthy environment for seeds. Mold LOVES wet, stagnant places. I've always either let them germinate in soil... or wet paper towels. Although, I'm willing to try out the "glass of water" technique in the near future.

they won't all germ at the same time...sometimes it can take longer then a week in the paper towel...you should have just been patient...i've always just done it in soil..it just seems more natural

So your sayiing they wont germinate at all since i took them from the paper towel and placed them in the cup of water?

also, being that the one seed germinated before the other ones, does this mean that they genetics may be better? is there any relationship between germination time and genetics?

well, you could try & place it in the cup after, but, i can't say, if it will work or not

sometimes, it's not the seeds that are bad. if you tampered with the seeds, that could be the problem
(leaving the seeds exposed to light or even touching it with your fingers)
you should be gentle, when handling the seeds & keep them in a dark cool place

at least, that's how 'I' handle my seeds

EDIT
if you haven't used all the seeds & have an extra
i suggest you try the cup filled germination method
it's just like planting it in the soil, doing it naturally
the only thing is, letting the seed sink, is somewhat a boost
the seed gets soaked with water, then planted & watered again
most of the time, the seed sprouts the next day, but, mostly the second day
(it's somewhat faster than waiting for the seed to crack)

good luck

OH! i forgot to say, for it to sprout in that 1-2 day period
it will need to be in a humidity dome or in a humidified box/closet
NOTE: 18 hours 'lights on' & 6 hours 'lights off'
^ just in case, you wanted to know or didn't know :D

best wishes
