Need Help Picking Inline Fan For Air Cooled Hoods

I need to get a good inline fan (or 2) to cool my Super Sun 2 hoods. I
have 2 going now and will have a total of 4 in the near future. All are
running 1000 watt bulbs. The room is sealed so the ducting will run from
the floor on one side of the room, up to the lights, out of the room, and
than outside. The exit to the outside is on the same floor as the room.

I'm thinking of going with Vortex but if anyone has any other suggestions,
I'd be happy to hear them. Their 8" 747 CFM looks nice but I don't know
if it will be big enough or overkill.

Also, what do I use for a filter where the intake ducting starts? I'd really like
to keep dust, bugs, and other crap out of the cooling system. I've been told
a nylon stocking works but if anyone knows of anything more professional
thats made to use as an intake filter, please post a link.

Thanks For All Replies,

Hey there, I'm installing new ventilation in my room as well, and I found these 2 webpages that should help you out....they explain in detail how to properly vent your lights and and your room as well.

1) Venting your lighting system
2) Venting your growing area

Are you going to be putting all 4 lights on the same ventilation system? If so, I would definitely go with an 8" fan....747 CFM seems like it should do the job. You could hook all 4 lights up in parallel (see the 1st link) and therefore, would only need 1 fan. Are your hoods 8"? you just want to make sure everything is the same size.

If you are running diff. ventilation for each pair of lights, a 6" would probably do. the higher the CFM, the cooler they will be :)

And for the filter, EcoPlus makes these bug screens that are made for inline fans/ducting. check it out --> http://www.growwurks.com/bug-screen-6.aspx. they are active carbon inserts that keep out mildew, bugs etc. :)

I use a 6" 440cfm for 2-600w inline and its barely enough. I wish it was stronger actually. Id say get 2 8" 747 cfm and have 2 exhausts entirely. I disagree with the last post. No such thing as overkill if you have a fan controller. With amplifiers its referred to as headroom. Plus if you run 1 inline, by the time the air flows over the very last light, its been heated 3 times and isnt even cool air anymore

I use a 440dcfm 6" fan for each 1000w x2 with fan speed controllers. I am cooling 2 radiant hoods through each fan and have had no problems cooling the lights even with a 6"-4" reducer for the exit. all my hoods are cool to the touch. Using a stocking is good but make sure to use a 6"-8"or10" expander so you have a larger area to stick your stocking over.
I personally don't use anything to filter my light hood air but I do get some dead moths and flies inside the hood from time to time.

Thanks for the replies. I was planning on getting a controller from the start so I could
get a little bit of a bigger fan and not run it at 100% max all of the time.

I'm going to go ahead and get the Vortex 8" for the two lights I currently have. When I
upgrade to two more lights I'll give it a test run with all four hooked up and the fan controller
cranked but I'll probably end up buying a second fan. With a sealed room I need these lights to
be as cool as possible, being in a basement helps but the temps still like to creep up.

hmm, I just picked up a 6" 440cfm for my 2 1,000s, so we'll see how it works. my room is smaller now and its been really hot outside lately, so the temp in the room has been getting up to high 80s-90....hope this fan is enough.

treetopmmmp, let us know how that works out :joint:

also, I just saw those bug screens at the hydro store, and all they are is a piece of screen and a piece of that activated carbon filter material that they use for air conditioners. they were only 11 bucks, but super easy to make if you have the materials around...
