Need an veteran to help me design a nice exhaust system

Hey gang I finally starting to design myself a grow within my basement. 8x8 foot I going to use 2x2 of the space for vegging and the rest for flowering.

My question is that do the exhausted air have to be pull to the outside of the house. Which I would like but it's weird how the window in the basement opens. ( It pull inward from the across the top of the window.) and I hate to have to cut a hole in my house, unless it's an absolute must. Is there a way I can exhaust air out this window without letting water in thorough this window during a rainy day?

if it opens to the inside , id simply build a box on the outside of that window , make it water tight so you dont have a leak indoors , maybe make it look like a window box maybe plant a couple cheap flowers in it , remember that an onlooker will see what you want them to see , what purpose it serves is the mystery, without seeing the outside of the spot i can only help so much w/o a visual.. hope this made some sense

Go to the RIU main page. Click on organics and then click on subcool's oldschool subforum. About the 8th sticky is all you need to know about venting. He's an a/c professional although it isn't about a/c. It's about ducting. Do yourself and read it a couple times. Educate yourself and you'll be good for any size project.

If you have a window AC unit... Hollow it out, and put the ducting inside of it.
The Hot air , and wind sound coming out of the AC looks normal to people on the outside.

I wish I did have an AC coming out of it. I think I might be able to get away with blowing the hot through one of my central air ducts to another part of the house upstairs since the central air unit is broken anyway. what do you think. Can't post pics right now my friend won't let my borrow his camera for another week or two.

hmm... I guess you can try that. But block off the terminals that you dont want the air to come out of with those magnetic strips they sell or cut a thick plastic bag to size and duct tape.
Then give it a try and see what happens.

Whats the matter with your ac unit? im an AC/Heating/Ventilation/Refrigeration Major in college, Maybe i can try and help you. But maybe... lol im not certified yet.

Also if that going through your central air vents doesnt work,,, Go out driving around and pick up an old AC unit someones throwing out. Maybe even a dumpster... take it home, clean it up a lil, hollow it out, and put it in your window like your using it to cool. Its a lil annoying but well worth it to be undetected.
But run the exhaust out thru it or right next to it....

Heres a pic of what i did. Im actually using the AC, but i run the Hot Air, and Filterd Air Ducts out right on top of the AC unit. You can only see one of the ducts, the other is on the other side, but you can get the idea

ArrOgNt RocKstAR, thanks for your suggestion but the problem is the window opens about two inches from the top. Let me try & explain it in more detail.

The window has a bar that comes down the middle of it and fastens at the top of the window. To open the window you just grab the bar lift it up a little and pull down which it only opens about 11/2 inches
maybe two. It's an old house built around the 1940's and these are the same windows that was built with the house.

Oh it's called a Hopper Window, this is how the window looks. The only thing mine are much older window that don't even open that far.

Right I guess that's my only choice

okay i see what your talking about.
You can try this... a little more work but it will work for sure.
Does that window have a screen? If so good, but if not cut one to size and put one there.

Leave the window about 1/4 way open, with the screen closed.

Then If you think you can get it over the window...Buy some black shades, the pull string ones. Put the shades over the window...Even if they're too long just pull the string and adjust it to the window... Tape the bottom of the shades to the wall, to keep them from moving.

Then buy some lumber... Build a Window Box to put over the Inside of the window. Its a wooden box with all sides except for one.

Cut the lumber to be bigger then the window.. preferably Deep and Tall, then deep and wide. That way you can attach your ducting to the bottom of it away from the screen so the air from the ducting wont blow the shade around.

Spray paint the inside of the box flat black, or primer grey.

Cut a few large duct size holes in it on the lower part of the box but not under...so you can fix your ducting to it.

Then the side of the window box that is open, the side where you can see the black spray paint, gets put over the window. Attach it with brackets or something, and seal the sides with duct tape or foam.

If you do that,,, Anyone walking by looking in that window will see a window with some dark shades, and what it looks to be just a dark room. And they'll never think anything of it.

Go to your hardware store explain how you want the window to open and they should be able to help you out . You will have to some minor altering to the frame but they can tell you how to do this to. It will be easy and very cheap. This should make exhaust simpler. Have fun
