Necessary to move to larger rock wool cubes?

Hello RollItUp,

Great community you've got here.

I've just one small question, I've normally grown in soil and have recently moved into hydroponics, Ebb and Flow ma's and DWC for clones.

However, I have ran into a small issue. The issue being I have 1 hydro shop in my area that I trust. It's far outside my own city and they only carry 2x2x2" rockwool cubes. In everything I have seen and read these are moved into a larger 4x4x4" or 6x6x6" cubes. After pricing the number of cubes I'll need online the price is monsterous. The shipping on the cubes nearly 3x the cost of objects themselves.

I do however, have a large supply of expanded clay pellets. I was wondering if it's really a vital step to upsize the cubes? Can I unwrap the sides of the 2x2x2" cubes and place them directly into the clay pellets?

I assume they would require more support until the roots established. But after that what's the difference?

Thank you for reading my lengthy question and any help.

You don't need larger cubes and you could switch to a method of growing with no cubes if you like. I've had just as good of results starting clones in little cups of very small lava rock, or pea gravel, or just pearlite. Anything like that works with no cubes at all and once rooted you just take it out of the cup and shake or rinse the little stuff out so you can use that small media again and then stick the naked rooted clone right into your hydroton.

Or just keep doin what you're doing...

Thank you for your reply. I can now continue my grow without worry about that issue. Now for the fear of root rot and a myriad of other things that could go wrong.

Mine goes straight into the hydroton in 2 inch cubes. The cubes are technically for rooting them in. like the other guy said, NO.

for hydro or soil you dont need cubes... for my bubbleponic setup i have the stem suspended with those foam letters kids play with in the bathtub.
