I'm just wondering if maybe it's too much calcium like this:
Water quality
Tap water and well water are two main sources that need to be checked for quality. Both can be contaminated with toxic levels of minerals. High levels of sodium (Na) are often found in well water and can cause excessive damage to plants. Saline water must be avoided at all costs.
Photo: yellowing, leaf curl, circular burnt spots on leaves, and leaf drop are typical symptoms from water with a high level of sodium.
Tap water can be “hard” from high levels of calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg). The pH is in this case very alkaline.
You're making the tap water even "harder".....just a thought

P lock-out. ph issues. often leads to death of plant, even after being addressed. will certainly effect yields.

In a case where someone only has access to saline treated water is there a way to alter it to make it safer for the soil? Would there be any way around the toxic build-up or should rain collection be considered?

Here's a link on how to get saline out. The most feasible is RO IMO. Of course rain water is good too.

Thanks for the resource. I don't know how fast the turnover for reverse osmosis is, but it sounds like a good option if I'm willing to drop a little money into it.
I might try solar distillation with a fresnel lens or an evaporation box and see how that goes. Rainwater may be the easiest depending on the harvest process, but is of course a limited source.
