My first grow, how bad will the plant smell?

Hey everyone :-P

I started growing in an old pc case (1.5'x1.5'x0.5') in my closet. It is currently under two 20 watt clfs. The plant is doing surprisingly well and I believe I can hide it from my parents. Because I'm growing in a PC case, I obviously have to keep the plant very short (max grow height of 1.3 feet). I'm going to induce flowering early and make use of tying down in order to keep the plant nice and short.

My only concern is that I get caught with the smell as soon as the plant starts to flower. My friend has grown the same strain (random bagseed we all smoke around here) outdoors and I didn't catch that big of a smell (and yes, I saw his plants while it was flowering). Do you think it's possible to somehow mask the smell? Or might it not be that bad? I'm only growing one plant that's really not gonna reach a great height...

I have read about carbon filters and all that, but I really want to hear from people who has, in the past, grown small plants.

I'm not sure being small will lessen the smell and it depends on strain/pheno, there is some stuff called ona gel, but perhaps build a cheapy homemade carbon filter, I'll try to find the thread for you. Good luck.

I promise you IT WILL STINK OUT YOUR BEDROOM AND YOUR PARENTS WILL FIND IT. Odur control is TOP PRIORITY. This is lessons learnt the hard way, trust me on this.

alright hey man, this is just my personal experience, but here check this out, im growing under 26w clf and this is my plant 3 weeks in, it is a strain designed to keep small short, and bushy, (timewarp ;D) IMG_1039[1].jpgIMG_1041[1].jpg I kinda like those pictures... anyway like I said im 3 weeks in and the room im growing in has a faint smell of it already! and has for about a week and it smells like grade A bud theres no mistake haha, so if your trying to hide it from your parents (im going to assume you moved back in after college) so ya it will smell weigh the consequences against the gain. you wont get much out of a homemade pc growbox and a 20w cfl either jussayin

You will get caught. Even a shitty genetics are gonna put off an odor that is unusual for the house. Your mom will come looking for dirty socks, and find your grow. Even if you mask the odor you will have explaining to do.

Thanks guys, you've all made some good points. I'm 19 (moving out next year) and this is sort of an experimental thing to see what I can achieve with the minimal equipment. Really just for fun and I'm not expecting much, if anything. Do you guys think I can just keep on growing and see if the smell gets real bad? If it does, I'll just toss the plant :-( I'll also look into making a cheap-ass filter that kindof works, just to try and eliminate some of the smell.

Btw, Stelthfire, you got some good looking plants there man! Keep it up. Also a pc grow I'm assuming?

well man go down to home depot and pick up a cool white 26watt cfl and your plant will love you. and why thankyou, and look at the fan bro, just some computer fans in 2 boxes ( one ontop of the other ) lined with well tin foil of all things haha if you check my profile I have a journal, if you need to see what your plant should look like, I haven't had any major problems, (accept accidently scratching my plant! ahah but she bounced back fine) and ok if you get the cfl you could veg for a month then turn to flower, if your keeping it tiny as hell, and if you need any planting equipment go to large garden shops, they will have everything, for some reason first timers usually don't like actually going to gardening stores for what they need, don't worry it will save you so much time, btw if you add nutrients during veg they should value (look on the box) 20-10-20 and 3 weeks in add a 1/4 dose, so if it says 8L for every packet, get a Rubbermaid container, wash it out fill it with the 8L (jush wash out a milk jug I guess) and add 1/4 of the pack in 8L

BTW! when you flower switch to the warm yellow Ish cfls, but youwill have to put it outside, don't turf it just grow outdoor, put it in a box take it to your favorite forest and boom try your luck who cares if it dies you were gunna just throw it out anyway

I was actually thinking about buying one more cool white (using one warm and one cool atm) this week. Yea, Ill check your profile, excited to see your grows. My plant basically looks the same, it just has thinner leaves (maybe leaning more towards the sativa side, hopefully it has indica genetics in height) and a tiny burn on one of the leaves :shock: It touched the cfl for a good hour while i was gone, but otherwise it looks pretty healthy. My camera is broken, so I can't take pics. I sure hope i don't have to toss it.

I'm sitting two floors up from my grow room and I can smell the buds from here. Weed stinks to high-heavens the last 4 weeks of flower. Hydro shops have stuff to kill the smell, I've never tried 'em......but am gonna pick some up today.

I'm on my first grow as well and am slightly panicking because I have to keep mine from smelling for four more days until I move. Tons of people are coming to see my house to rent it and I'm in week one and a half of flower and it's getting pretty stinky. Three odor neutralizers brand new are barely cutting it.

Carbon filters are amazing. i ordered 4 thin ones, the ones you slid into cat transporter boxes. i made a make-shift filter system for my drying process and it worked really well. my room stunk during vegetative and flowring growth, but during the drying process with these filters, my room didnt smell at all!

deffo get some carbon filters, i got mine from a pet store for under £10.

ONA gel is awesome, I use a carbon scrubber for smell usually, but I keep the ona gel by the door for when I need to open the door to peep the plants. That said, even with both I can occasionally catch a wiff, and I only grow one plant as a time in a 22.5x22.5 grow box.

I honestly don't think there is any way to hide the smell 100%. My first plant (bag seed) started smelling early in veg and I didn't even notice... a friend came in and said it smelled like weed... I guess I'm just so used to the smell. I got a carbon filter attached to a 117cfm fan and at first, the smell was supposedly gone... but when it went into flower it was another story. Every time I opened the doors to the cab, the whole place apartment smelled like I'd just smoked a fat blunt in every room. It was bad. Got some Ona gel and it was a definite improvement. But no matter what I did, the smell was still there... very very subtle most of the time - I wouldn't notice until I came home after being gone for a while. If you decide to grow in your parents house, grow as if you're fully aware they will 100% find out.

May as well save some time and energy and toss it now.
1 small plant will efficiently stink up a whole floor of a house, simple as that.
A filter is the only way to get rid of the smell.
The scented shit only tries to mask the smell, it dose not get rid of it.
