My First Grow: DWC in Grow Box w/ 250 HID Bulb (Open Thread)

Thanks everyone. I had some family and friends over this past weekend, the only ones who knew about the grow... and they all agreed, there looked like there was a lot more than 3 oz in those jars. so i'm looking into ordering another digital scale sometime soon and remeasuring... despite already having smoked a good 1/4 oz., at least.

So the one person I smoked up with the AK-48 (which I think is the least potent) got absolutely bombed off of two hits. In fact, it put him over the edge for an hour or so... he had to sit down and kept drinking water. Said it was the highest he's ever been. Another friend was blown away by the potency... and the quantity... and the pictures.

Looks like I done good! Now to start thinking out the next. Going to type out my preliminary plans for my next grow.

My place is not big so I'm a bit limited in where I can grow. I use my main storage closet, and for this past grow, I ended up not being able to use it for anything else. So I had boxes, sports equipment and tools stacked up in the rest of my place.

With that said, I'm going to build a new grow box for my next grow which will still allow me to also be able to store some items back in my closet.

I plan on using the same lights since I'm on a tight budget. I'm very happy with my Agrosun bulb in that it contains both MH and HPS. Also happy with my ghetto homemade reflector, but I need to add a cooltube.

I do plan on making a taller grow box, one at least 5' tall. But wanted your suggestions... maybe even 6' tall?

As for the layout, check out the below picture. You'll see that it's going to be a "long," single-row grow, hopefully with 4 plants packed in their tightly, since I'm going to be either lollipopping or just focusing more heavily on the canopy.

My concern with this layout is that the HID light will only be over the two middle plants and the CFLs over the two plants on each end. I hope to have my light about a foot over the plants at the most, so I'm worried the two side plants will get enough of the HID light. Anyone have any insight to this?

Going to take my time getting this one together, but I imagine it will start around the end of this month.

In my mind... if you CAN make it 6 feet do it. Why not 8 feet, haha. But really 6 feet would be pretty good. By the time you take out the space used for light and your pots (hydro or soil)... you only have maybe 4 feet of grow space, so why limit yourself if you don't need to. But then again this is coming from the person who set out to have a personal grow and ended up with a giant semi pro (in my mind anyways) set up.

Don't worry about the light. I mean you can't change things. You will see how they cfl's get the side plants... the hid's might catch them on the side a bit as well. It should be fun to see what they actually do. I mean you might get fluffy buds from the edge plants, but so what... you'll do better the next time. It's going to be fun to get a system dialed in once we make up our minds and find one we want to run with a few grows.

I have a slightly different idea about the configuration. Basically the same, but thinking about what will happen differently (ie edge plants will be smaller).

Glad your visitors were impressed. Must feel good to know you grew that. Mad props homey.

I agree with Jig NS go taller. Remember the problem I ran into? You have to kill 2' off the bat with the container and lighting. I never even gave that a thought when I built mine.

You could possibly do it like my pic. Let the plants on the side grow closer to the middle, the use string to straighten them out so all 4 are closer to the main light. I dunoo just a thought. this would also effect your height too. If 6 feet is all you have then maybe you should just consider vegging them a little less?

Thanks for all of the feedback guys. I think I'll compromise and go somewhere in between... around 5'6". I'm going to start cleaning out the old grow box and start building the new one this weekend.

I smoked some of Mary Jane tonight and eff me she is some strooooooonggggg bud! Wow I cannot wait to start smoking her. She still needs to sit for at least another week.

Unreal... I literally just spent 9 hours on the computer researching buying seeds for my next grow. So what strains did I decide to go with and where did I get them from? Read on to find out...

The first steps for my next grow started today. With the success of my first grow and being on an extremely tight budget this time around, I've decided to copy many of the same aspects while introducing some new ones.

I will be sticking with a grow box constructed of poster board, "insulated" with aluminum foil and lined with reflective "mylar" wrapping paper. However, due to the change in dimensions and increase in size of the box, I decided to the need to build a frame out of wood.

For lights, I will be recycling all lighting from my first grow. I had thought about buying an MH bulb, but in my research, it seems the Agrosun bulb is ideal since it contains both MH and HPS.

I will be purchasing 3 plastic containers (probably the shoebox storage sized ones) to house 3 different plants.

The dimension of my box has changed slightly since the original plan I posted:
- Had to narrow it down a little, so it is now 3 1/2' wide.
- Increased the height slightly based on feedback received, increasing to 5 1/2' tall

So the new dimension will be 3.5' W x 15" D x 5.5' H.

I went out and purchased the wood today from Home Depot and will begin tearing apart my old grow box tomorrow. I will also continue to gather everything together for my next grow.

As for the strains and the seeds?

I will be going with one new strain and one classic strain:
- After doing a whole lot of homework, I decided to go with the 2008 Cannabis Cup winner, Super Lemon Haze. Bought 3 feminized seeds.
- As for the classic, was torn between Northern Lights and White Widow... ended up going with the latter. Bought 5 feminized seeds.

Bought the seeds from Attitude... read some great reviews about them on RIU. Both seeds are Green House Seed' strains.

I will begin a new journal as soon as I have my new grow box set up. That's all the update for now.

Great choice on the haze brother. That is on my top 5 list of strains I want to try. It has a 22.9% THC level. Very narcotic The highest I have seen was 25% and it was not recomended to light weights.

Jigs, I was so stoked when I came the Super Lemon Haze. I REALLY like the sound of the effects of it. You know me... I have a high tolerance and looking for that "pineapple express" of mine. Speaking of which, in my research last night, found out a company actually developed a crap strain called pineapple express... I guess trying to capitalize on the opportunity.

So Jigs, you heard anything about the strain yet? Like difficulty to grow? Height?

From what I heard, it can easily reach 5 ft. if left untrained. I haven't heard anything about difficulty to grow.

I know you weren't impressed w/ your White Widow, but I wanted to give it a shot anyways. I think White Widow is one of those strains that everyone avid toker needs to try smoking just once. I heard that Greenhouse's White Widow can also grow pretty tall.

So with that said, I have a feeling I will be doing some LST once again (despite saying I would not do that this time around).

I'm getting more excited about my next grow with every passing day. I'm about to run to my "local" hydroponics shop (just called to make sure they're open on Labor Day... and they are! woohoooo!). Place is about 40 mins away, not exactly local, but this shop is goooood. I went there before my last grow and the store is run by a father-son duo. They were really helpful with my first grow and gave me a lot of great tips. I never mentioned what I was growing once, and though I don't exactly look like someone who would be a grower, they knew exactly what I wanted to grow. It was like we were talking in code the whole time, haha. Great products and okay prices. I'm basically going to go to compare prices from some Internet prices. Need to purchase the following:

- Nutes, probably going GH's Flora series again, but I'm going to see what they recommend.
- Looking into Humboldt County's Own - Gravity, which jigfresh recommended for flowering
- Netpots
- Rockwool

Those are the main items. But just for shits and giggles, also going to look into the cooltubes, reflectors, and meters. Though I'm on a tight budget, if I see something for a bargain, I'll def pick it up.

I'm having deja vu... feel like I'm doing my first grow all over again. Learning everything all over and making trips purchasing everything I need. Love it.

Hey bro, I swear I posted last night, guess it didn't go through.

WOOOOO HOOOOOO, starting on the second grow already. Man SLH is one herb I would love to grow/ smoke. I've never smoked it, but really want to.

Watch out though... like you ask, they get tall as hell, and Fast. Check out Bucketheads journal... Oh, and another thing about his SLH (if I remember correctly), the fan leaves were as big as basketballs. Hard to beleive, check the thread and the pics, Wild.

https://www.rollitup.org/grow-journals/161619-bucket-heads-09-set-up.html

I found the pic of the leaf:

White Widow should treat you good.... I think the thing with her is that she doesn't like as much nutes as other strains (maybe I'm full of shit, but I think that). I think I just overloaded her. Don't get me wrong, just because I didn't like my WW, doesn't mean it's not one of my all time favorite smokes (when done right). I think you'll have better luck than I.

I'm stoked for you.

While looking for the Buckethead thread I found other threads you might get something out of:

You did post last nite! Jigs, you either need to... a) stop smoking so much... or b) smoke some more and hope that you get that "subconscious recall" kinda thing, if you know what I'm talking about.

Dude, fan leaves the size of basketball?!?!? Holy crap! I guess I will def be going LST afterall.

I picked up the gravity like you recommended... the store owner said I will definitely see denser "flowers" aka bud. So thanks for that tip.

Okay, so Jigs... my grow area will be approx 3 1/2 feet by 15 inches. I know I will definitely be able to get 3 plants in there. Question is... what do you think about fitting 4? With the size of the SLH that you're saying, I'm thinking I should keep it to 3 in order to give each plant a little over 1 sq ft growing space. But what do you think?

Thanks for all those links, I'll check 'em out soon.

I'd say 3. If there isn't enough plant for you, just veg another week. I can't wait to see what happens. :bigjoint:

Well boys and girls, this grow journal is coming to it's end. I imagine maybe 1 or 2 more official posts from me, but I will be starting a new journal pretty soon. I haven't bee on RIU a lot this week, been busy and spending most of my free time:
1) researching for my next grow
2) building my next grow "box" (it's more like a cabinet)
3) getting ready for the 2009 fantasy football season... 4 teams, yep. 4 teams. unbelievable.

Thanks Jigs for that suggestion. I definitely agree with you about the 3 plants. Plus with the stories I've heard about the Super Lemon Haze, I think I will only have room for 3.

As soon as I start my next journal, I'll let you all know. I am planning on starting my next grow within 2 weeks.

After a bit of a hiatus, I'm back and here to wrap things up here while moving on to my next journal. This will be my last official post in this thread, though I will continue to respond to any questions that might come up.

I've been spending the last two weeks:
- tearing down and cleaning up the old box
- setting up my new box/cabinet
- doing a lot of homework preparing for my next grow
- enjoying the fruits of my labor... and damn it's been good

Before I close this one out, I want to thank those of you who have been following and helping along the way. I want to give a particular special shout out to jigfresh, who has followed me from the very beginning. Without his help, I just don't think I could have had the results I had. So thanks again jigfresh.

I've already started my next journal, so from this point forward, hope you guys will all follow me along my next journey. My next journal can be found at https://www.rollitup.org/grow-journals/246796-neversummers-2nd-grow-cabinet-dwc.html.

So with that, I feel it is only appropriate to leave with two last pictures... the empty closet and the collapsed grow box.
