My First grow! CFL, Moby Dick Feminized, Closet Grow.

Hey all. This is my first post/grow. Sorry if I make some Newbie etiquette mistakes.

First I want to say that my set up is completely crazy and unorthodox. I am growing with a table lamp fitted with a 26 Watt (100 Watt Equiv.) And two others hanging from a Y splitter. The walls are painted white but the door is not. I have been watering her when the soil feels dry a couple inches down. I began with one skunk #1 Seed (Flying Dutchman "The Pure") and my free Moby Dick seed.

Against all odds both Germinated. I uprooted the Skunk because I thought it had died. (It was only drooping...Mistake) The Moby Dick plant however is growing beautifully. It is day 12 of our grow and I am beginning to start my journal. Any and all help would be appreciated.

I am posting pics below of:

P.S. I already posted this in the Newbie section but I figured this is probably a better place to post it.

She looks great so far!

I am also growing some Moby Dick I got for free in FFOF soil (FoxFarm Ocean Forest) alongside some others. Mine is a bit smaller than yours at this point, but she is gonna take off soon.

If you need some help with a CFL soil grow, I can probably be of some assistance at times, depending upon the issue.

Wow, Thank you so much!
I'm Wondering about LSTing too, do you think it is too early to start?

Yeah its early.

You need to have a strong stem.

Not to offend you, but since this is your first grow, why not keep it simple and just learn to grow the plant normally, as opposed to mixing in LST?

Given your setup, I don't see any real advantage to employing LST either, unless I missed something.

That's my advice. After you learn how to grow, then start experimenting. It's a lot less frustrating

I'm still debating LSTing as it is my first grow. I'm also going to get some more lights in there soon as well as Mylar reflector.

Also I'm getting a little worried that the new growth is coming in a lil yellowish, I am looking into some nutrients but should I wait, if not what should I look for? Fox farm Big bloom? MG?

She looks great. I have several questions/things for you to consider.

Notice how she is kinda stretched out? My guess is the lights were a tad too far away in the beginning. Keep them 1-3" from the plant at all times to avoid this. Its bad because if it is too elongated, the plant will fall over because its top heavy.

If I were you, I would add a bit more soil and bury that stem slightly. Don't go crazy, just a little more for added support and strength.

Why is there a water droplet on your plant when she is under light? This is a no no. Water acts like a lens and can actually burn your plant. Keep her dry under the lights.

No MG. Its crap compared to Fox Farm. Get a bottle of Grow Big and Big Bloom.

How big are those containers? Meaning how much soil do they hold?

How often are you watering? Be specific.

How MUCH are you watering? Are you adjusting the ph before pouring it in?

I would use 1 tablespoon of Big Bloom and 1/4 TEASPOON of Grow Big per gallon of water. Mix it all up real nice. If you only want to make a half gallon so you don't waste it, use 1/2 tablespoon and 1/8 teaspoon.

Well, give me some detailed specific feedback and Ill help where I can.

All lights have been moved closer to the plant.

Check

Its a 12" 3 1/2 gallon container.

This is a little tricky. As you can tell, I jumped the gun a little bit before doing my research. I did not weigh the pot with soil in it in the beginning so I don't really have a reference point. But I have watered her about 4 times since she sprouted, either with my Mister, or recently with about 3-4 ounces of water. She is a little sensitive to watering which is why it has been so long between feedings. I dont have a Ph meter either so I havent tested.

This sounds perfect. Thanks!

Ok well 3.5 gallons of soil....with that sprout and your lights....

I would say somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-12 ounces per every 3-5 days would be right.

Try and flood her, but gently. MJ likes to be flooded, then droughted, flooded, droughted.

Let the container fully dry out (not enough to kill the plant, obviously). You can lift the plant up and look through the drainage holes and see if its still fairly moist on bottom.

You don't want to keep the medium wet constantly or you risk root rot. By letting the soil dry out, the roots go searching for water. More roots = stronger, better plants. So just make sure the medium is allowed to dry out somewhat. The container should feel way lighter when ready to water than post watering.

You'll get it! :peace:

She grows more and more everyday.

Day 15: She started her first fox farm treatment today. I couldn't afford both Big Bloom and Grow Big, so I started with big bloom. I know Grow Big is supposed to be better for vegetative but I also know I can add it in later.
She is beginning to grow leaves at her joint (Node?)

Looking nice.

The Big Bloom isn't going to cut it though here real soon.

I wouldn't wait more than another week or two max. If you start seeing yellowing in the leaves, it will be a sure sign you need to get it asap.

No doubt! I plan on getting some before her next feeding, She gets a pure water next though.
Also I'm bumping up to some bigger CFLs and then hopefully another Y splitter for the ones that I'm already using!
This is starting to feel like a real grow!

Day 17:
New growth seems to be coming in fine.

I'm noticing my first set of problems though.

1. Her cotyledons seem to be turning yellow. I've heard this is normal as she will be depleting the nutrients in these leaves, but I want to make sure it doesn't spread to her true leaves.

2. Her main stem seems to be filling up rather nicely. It gets thicker and greener everyday. However now the true leaves seem to be developing a purple tinge to their stem.

I'm wondering if I should use my Grow Big/Big Bloom mix even though I gave her, her first feeding just two days ago?
All and all I think she is still very healthy. She has begun to smell quite strongly. I'm finding that I'm having just as much fun with this grow as I would say...smoking?

...K, probably not that much :leaf:
