My First Grow Box! Looking for feedback

Im about to build my 400 watt HPS (possible LST/scrog) grow box and I am looking for suggestions and feedback.

Dimensions: 5' 4" Height 5' Width 2' Deep

I want to grow a minimum of 4 plants, up to 7 or 8 if possible. Could I grow that many and still maintain odor and have enough space in the dimensions and hardware Im working with? This is what I plan on buying...

Carbon Filter - Phresh Filter 6" x 16" 400 CFM w Flange Carbon Can Odor Control Inline Fan

Odor Control
Ive heard that ozone generators can be bad for you, but negative ion generators are safe.. Are they effective?

I will construct my grow box soon so I would like to hear all of your suggestions before I build it! Am I missing anything?

Would you recommend different lights/filter/fan/etc...?

Opinions on the box?

Thanks all for checking my thread. Hope to share a nice grow journal with all of you soon :)

Anyway you can build it taller? If you are going to lst/scrog that is a good good space and pretty much what you want to do. You may discover you want more light or even a smaller hps for flowering. I asked about taller because it would be sweet to have a clone/veg chamber to keep things going instead of veg through flower in that box. You can scrog with two plants in that area and it will fill it up. Or you could do sog with more plants. More plants does not always mean more buds. How you grow and train can produce same amount of tops in that space. Less variables, less to worry about. Where will this box be located. Sounds like your on the right track.

Don't buy the ozone generator....spend this money on more lights.....and buy more lights...

Looks like a nice set up...but you're going to want more light...

I could increase the height by another foot if needed, but I have another grow box I can use to veg.

Only reason for more plants is because they are all different kinds. Could I still do more plants and LST them all for a bit, then in flower put the screen up for scrog so they dont hit the lights?

Was thinking a foot taller also on the box. Also from what I have read you should not need the ozone gen as you are using a carbon filter. I would consider using a 400w HPS instead of all those cfl, but then you would have to vent the heat generated from the light. One more 4 inch fan and ducting would would great tho for that. What garden setup are you using?

I corrected the lights information in the first post. Do I still need more lights? I am concerned about how big the plants will be (if i decide to do 7 different stains) Could I still LST them for a bit then in flower put the screen up for scrog so they dont burn up in the lights?

Ive never used a HPS light before and I think I would be concerned about the amount of heat it produces. I listed what carbon filter and fan I want to use in the first post, but Im not sure what to do about the intake fan. I know it should be less CFM than the exhaust so it creates a negative vacuum. Also will that carbon filter work for my set up? I have heard Mountain Air is one of the best companies out there.

The garden setup was built from a wooden frame and will be sealed up tight.

Yeh you still need more lights imo....Lst a bit and under a screen at a later point is how I'm growing at the moment as well, so no problem there. Well, there may be a minor pain in the ass/arse in growing different strains under a screen as it's a bitch to harvest one strain that's ready, whilst not disturbing the strains that aren't

I don't think you'll need an intake fan..passive should be fine...which saves even more £/$ to buy an hps light for flowering...

(Edit) My best advice (now I've had my morning coffee/blunt ;)) is to set your grow up with your cfls, pop your seeds, whilst your waiting for that research a bit on "topping" and "Lst" and "Scrog".

No need to worry about odour control, hps lights etc for a good few weeks :)

And doing something is usually better than talking about it...imo

What strains are you thinking about growing?

So no intake fan, just a vent with an air filter over it is all? (for dust and other things)

Ok, after some reading I think I will go with the HPS light. How many watts do you recommend? 400-600-1000? Price range around 150$.

Yes for your setup scrog/lst is a good setup. And you can get those lights very close to the plant. What k lights you have? You should have enough. Lol. You shouldn't need anything else for odor control but your carbon filter. Make sure you have good air movement get some fans...some reflective covering or white paint. What is your growing medium going to be? Read up on some grow journals on people with similar setups.

This is actually my second grow, but will be my first grow that I invested money into (it was a much cheaper set up than this lol :) So I have researched those subjects. (BTW there is a very good thread here. (http://forum.grasscity.com/indoor-medical-marijuana-growing/1014275-overview-cannabis-training-scrog-sog-fim-supercrop-lst-etc.html)

I used CFLs in the past and its time to upgrade to a HPS light. The 20 CFL light bulbs still had 9000 less lumens than the single 400 HPS light. Ive checked HTGSupply and there are so many different configurations they offer.. its a bit overwhelming.

Just to be clear. Filter-fan-exhaust. The one fan pulling air out of your tent, and an open intake with no fan; "passive"

My space is 6ft x 2ft and I have two 400w hps in cool tubes...so a 400w will do, possibly more.

Couldn't advise on a light, unless you're coming to England to buy it ;)

Digital is best, they run cool and quiet, and the wattage can be adjusted on some.

It'l be a while until you need one though; Cfls will be fine for veg (also my method at the moment) just make sure your bulbs are the blue end of the light spectrum

Using mylar paper to reflect light.

Grow medium will just be some nice soil, no hydroponics this time :)

How many fans would I need? My carbon filter already recycles the air 5 times per minute. Isn't that enough?

About the lights, Im still looking into getting a HPS light, but Ive only used CFLs up until this point so its new to me. I also need one that fits within the dimensions Im working with. (only 2' deep)

Nothern Lights
Lemon Haze
White Widow
Carmelicious
White Russian
Jack H
Amnesia Haze

I don't need to do all of them... Im still not sure how many I want to do... 3 minimum, up to 7 if possible. To try all the different danks :joint::hump:

I like hid/hps dimable light. Will be my next upgrade to a 600. I run a 400 now with 160 Cfm inline fan with air cooled hood ducted out to attic. My temps still get very hot and I am in a 5'x2'x8' closet. Anywhere from 75 to 85 depending on ambient temps in my spare room where the closet is. A little more height would help and you may have to duct cool air in. Where is this box located? If you have two boxes use the cfl to veg and clone. A 400 is as big as I would go but that might be to much heat still.

Cool tubes! They tend to concentrate the light, which is a pain for most, but with the 2ft deep grows we have they're ideal...

One fan to filter and a household fan to move air around the tent?....

I think I better move along now, I'm getting confused...lol!

I will look them up now. thanks :)

Someone else suggested I use more fans. I thought my 180 CFM carbon filter would be enough. Since it recycles the air 5 times every minute, couldnt that manage the high heat of the HPS light on its own?

Yes you should use a couple 6 inch clip on fans or an oscillating fan. It moves are around the grow area. Helps build stronger healthier plants. Keeps it cooler under the lights at the tops of the plants.
