My 400w MH/HPS Super Skunk Grow

The best thing you could possibly do to get the temps down is invest in an aircooled hood.
There is much wisdom in this.... Like 25° worth of it. I made the move from wing reflector to air cooled and went from 99° to 76 comfortably with relatively shit exhaust compared to yours.
I found a cool tube on eBay for $37. I will have to buy 6"-4" adapters and some more ducting but I think I can make it work. My only struggle is the small space I have to work with.

Hey there. This is my 2nd grow. My first was short rider using CFL's in soil. This time I am trying Nirvana's Super Skunk in a DWC setup running a 400w MH veg and HPS bloom.

SETUP
2x2x6 Tent with 1 plant
SCROG method
400w Metal Halide and HPS bulbs
(1) 3.5 Gallon DWC bucket
Single air pump with 1 airstone
eBay no brand Veg and Bloom nutrients (came with DWC Kit)
pH up and down plus test kit
Clip on fan

I plan on buying a 4" carbon filter, high power exhaust fan, and low power intake fan as well. I will be setting those up very soon.

She is 5 days from seed right now. Started her off on 8/21 in water soaked rockwool under a glass bowl.

My goal is to yield at least 4 ounces dry with one plant using SCROG. Let me know what you think.

..General Hydroponics is a no-name brand? Or did you only get their pH Up/Down?

Week 6 Update

I am growing a monster here folks. She gets bigger by the day. I did not buy an air cooled hood. I'm going to try and make it through this grow without one. I turned my light ballast back to 75% and I also rotate frozen water bottles into the tent 2 times a day. This keeps my temps around 85F.

image.jpg

I did a water change in my res and made it 500PPM. I check pH every few days and maintain it around 5.5-6. Roots are looking healthy and big!

image.jpg

I have been tucking every 2-3 days. Some colas are taller than others due to my 4x4" screen squares. But overall it's a relatively even canopy. I now have 23 bud sites forming (shown in red below)

image.png

Most likely I will be flipping to 12/12 tomorrow. I'll give her one more week of stretching to fill out the screen and then it's off to the races!

I'll end this update with a nice picture of my 4 way stalk. She is getting pretty beefy.

What do you all think? Am I ready to flip to 12/12???

Looking good brother.

The decision to switch is based soley upon what your trying to accomplish. If it were me id wait one more week for her to fill in a little more then flip her.
You could flip right now though and be fine :)
I think I'll just take it day by day. I'm going to hold off for now. Maybe I'll flip middle of next week. I just don't want it to get over crowded and then have my bud tips too close to the light. Super skunk is a 10 week flower according to Nirvana

Be careful with the temps. 85 is going to be really hot for flowering especially with you doing DWC. That reservoir temp is crucial anything over 72 and you're inviting root rot. If there is any way you can swing a can fan and air cooled hood you'd be helping yourself out. The up coming fall should help as temps drop but just be vigilant because root rot happens rather quick. Other than that the plants looking great hope it works out for you.

After some more reading, I decided to order a cool tube and some more ducting to help with temps. Hopefully it should be here by next week.

Anyway, I still have lights on 18/6 as of today. I think I am going to hold off the flip a few more days. I'll post pics this weekend.

Week 7 Update

I officially flipped to 12/12 today and I switched my bulb to the HPS. I am expecting to have my cool tube hood within the week. My temps are still 85F and the roots are looking healthy. Now for the pics!

I am counting about 25 total tops. I might get a few more that stretch above the canopy in the next week or so. (See pic below)

I also decided to do some light lollipopping. I trimmed some of the lower growth that was not getting any light. I also trimmed some of the dying fan leaves. Here's how she looks now (see below)

Any suggestions??? When will I see pistols? Lol

You'll probably start seeing small pistils on some of the highest node areas within the week.
I would cover that net pot/hydroton to help with water temps... Rez temp over 72f and you are asking for a failed crop. Try a frozen water bottle or chilling your refill water before adding it.

I've been using cold water every time I fill the res. I also keep a frozen water bottle next to the res to help keep the temp down a bit. When my air cooled hood gets delivered, I should be good.

Help me guys!

I just switched to HPS and 12/12 a few days ago.

I am running a 3.5g DWC Scrog. I've been using GH MaxiGrow around 700PPM. I just switched to MaxiBloom around1000PPM.

It's a 400w light. It's 16" from the plant.

Ever since I switched lights, the new growth and fan leaves are curling down like a claw. They are also looking a bit yellow.

Temps are about 80F. I always use cold water in my res and I keep a frozen water bottle next to the res.

Pics

At first I thought it was over watering or my water level was too high or maybe my air stone was clogged. I Flushed the bucket and lowered the water level way down but it has not helped.

Any suggestions???

Do roots have enough room in there? They look crammed.Maybe a bigger bucket??

Try wrapping a towel or thick blanket around the bucket, some type of insulation on it. The reason the leaves droop in other mediums due to over watering, is because the roots are too wet to get oxygen to them. Same concept in DWC when the Rez temps get over 72f.
You see , after 70f the ability of water to hold dissolved oxygen decreases tremendously and actually mimics the problems with over watering.
TL;DR cooler water will stop the wilt

So if I can maintain my res temp below 70F do you think my plant will recover? It is curling and twisting really bad. I don't want to lose out on yield.

Do you have a way to check your Rez temp? Because that would tell us the problem for sure, but I'm about 98% sure it's a DO issue now that the plants are going into the stretch full swing and growing hard. With no real chilling in the Rez, even with that bottle outside... I reckon it only takes 4 gallons of water about an hour or 2 to become the same temp as the ambient temp of the room. So 75-80f water all the most of the time.
