Mr. Homegrown's DIY Soil and WW Grow

Well my babies have had a very busy 2 days. Yesterday they got a rotor tilling, feeding, a topping of fresh soil, and a bath. Before a feeding, and periodically in between, I like to gently work up the soil with my fingers all around the plant about a good fingers length deep around the outside of the pot and shallower as I move in closer to the plant. You’ll be able to feel the root ball if you get to close.

They then received a feeding of AN Micro, Grow, Bloom, and Maxicrop at 565 ppm and 6.3-6.4 ph. I then sprayed/ misted them down with tap water. I have very good well water it usually runs 6.5-7.2 ph at around 180 ppm so, I usually don’t do much with it. Here are some pics of them today.

Here is my most vigorous one.

Look at this inner structure on it :o...

Here is my special baby that grew 2 tops. Notice how the branches are staggering.

Some better pics of where it made 2 tops. The tops and the second node don't seem to be spacing any...maybe it is 4 tops

Lets check the soil…

and another pot.

So far, so good!!! I topped and fimmed them today so more pics to come :leaf:

This afternoon the babies got a hair cut, well all except the straggler in the middle. That one I probably will not top. For the most part after trimming off the 1st node’s growth I topped the majority at the 4th node removing the 5th. Here are some pics.

On my most vigorous one I removed the 1st node growth, as before, but I left 5 nodes after that, taking out the 6th. This baby’s going to be able to support some growth!!

My special WW I have just got to fimm it! That would be crazy to end up with 6,8, or more tops and I just gotta see it!! This plant only has 3 main nodes of growth so I did not remove the bottom set. They are already about 1 ½ inches long with established nodes. I figured I’ll remove them later if it looks like it needs it. So here are some pics of it fimmed.

When I cut this other side I slipped and cut the shade leaf, on the back side, for the node beneath:cuss: I don't think that's what they meant by FIM... or maybe it was...lol.

Here is an over view pic of them after topping and fimming.

Pic of razor, scissors and trimmings.

Well that's all for that. I did some training on that double topped one but don't think I will get it on today :leaf:

I have decided to do some training on my special plant. From the pics below you’ll can see that the tops are shooting out on like a 45 degree angle and second node branches are growing nearly horizontal.

I cannot afford growing space for a hedge so I am going to use a bread tie and pull those top branches in to get them growing up more.

Now that looks much better.

The 2nd node branches are still runnin wild though…

So I’ll fix them.

There, that looks much better...

as compared to before.

Here is a pic of the branch curving.

Everything is placed so it is not interfering with new nodal growth. After placing the bread tie and the sticks, I go back through each time and pick-out the leaflets so none are bound or folded. I’ll leave it this way for a week or so until the branches harden up some and retain the shape. That is all I got for now. Probably won’t get any more pics on til the next feeding. Thanks for stopping by my journal! :leaf:

That is one crazy plant Mr homegrown! I used to grow in soil as well, so I will be watchin. Good luck with your grow, brother!
Thanks for stopping in Theanswer!! Yeah I don't know if it is some deformity of genetics or what but, it is really healthy. The only one not showing a little nut burn. I just think it's going to be fun to grow.

Got a neat "oddball" plant growing. That'll be fun to watch !

Seems like you really know what your doing. I'll just sit back and watch. Subscribed.

Oh, I don't know about that, I'm always open for suggestions! I read alot but, haven't quite found my nitch yet. Seems like every grow something goes wrong. Keeps me learning. I have not lost one yet, knock on wood, but limped thru a few! This is my biggest op so far and I've only done the last 4 with this many plants. All the rest were 4 and under. Grow shop is 2 1/2 hours away and forces me to get creative lol.

The plants took off very nicely, so I took some pics yesterday. Well, most of them did. My wild fimmed plant grew some, but nothing compared to the others. I tried fimming on one other grow awhile back and decided then, for me, it was not worth it. The plant seems to take longer because it is trying to establish growth from almost nothing where the topped plants know they no longer can grow from there, so they put it to what they can. I just had to fim this plant though. Here is some pics of my fimmed wild one.

Now the others...

and my most vigorous one.

That's all I got for now, thanks for stopping in:leaf:

They're looking good. Sorry the fimming didn't go as planned. Im afraid to try it since well Id probably fuck it up my first time trying. Topping or leaving as is is so much easier. My latest set of 5 babies are gonna be untopped. I want to see what type of yield I get with untopped plants.

P.S. Can you upload your pictures from your account so that they show up thumbnails instead of big pictures. It takes forever to load this page :)

Just by reading a lot, you are leaps and bounds ahead of some guys. Really does seem like you've done this a couple times. What issues did you run into last time ? PH problems ? or Nutes ? Or... ? Just curious. Seems like it is always something. Keeps ya on your toes !

And looks like your making yourself a nice little nitch. Don't knock yourself man. Got something to be stoked about. But if I see anything I can think of I will chime in. If you are having any issues at all, just ask. Someone should be able to help you out pretty quickly. :peace:

Na, that's just the way they start. Same thing it did to me last time (diff. strain). By the time they get established I will have already topped the rest again. The timing should work out for the light cycle...hopefully lol.

Sorry. From my album? That's were I upload all my pics. How do I do it?

Thanks. Yeap, PH. For some reason my soil went way acidic. I worked lime in the top soil and flushed but, the flushing did not do anything for it and the lime just corrected the soil as far as I could work it in. I limped thru by keeping the ph a little higher for the feedings trying to help offset it. Never did figure it out. I switched from GH to AN midway and thought maybe they didn't work together (salt buildup??). But I also used some nursery soil that just would not let go of water. I mixed it with an adequate amount of perlite to airate it but when I got it going that did not seem to matter.

Worst one I ever ran into was a Boron Def. I could NOT figure out what was wrong until the stem split open and exposed the brown. I went to a health food store and got some Boron vitamins. I crushed them up and dissolved them in the water. A week or two later it closed up (still could tell it split) and I got some really good bud off it. Creative...lol.

Nope, doesn't load them into the album. Thanks for the compliment. Hopefully by next wednesday I should be able to put 3 girls into flowering that are 12 inches +.(Got another tent for the rest to continue vegging) Then the real fun begins.

400w plantmax mh for vegging, and 400w plantmax hps flowering. (On a budget and they're the cheapest horticultural bulbs out there). I guess ill know in a few months how decent they re. My lil ladies are already making the upstairs stink a fair bit. I have to mount my carbon filter tonight. My homemade one didn't do shit. Last time I try DIY. Bought one for $42 from an ebayer. Hopefully it'll work much better than mine did.

Got to love ebay. I get some good deals there myself. My plants stunk a little when I was messing with them for topping but then it quit. :-( Hmm I was going to do a DIY too. I got a ozone generator on my last grow and put it in the room with my box. It helped but I think it was too much for it (ozone jr). Yours didn't work at all or just not as good as it should have?

Didn't work at all. The carbon wasn't tightly compacted. It didn't have an equal layer of carbon all the way around. DIY stuff is over-rated. You dont save alot, and the frustration, and time spent putting it together only to find out it doesn't work well isn't worth it.

First time I tried to mix my own soil I had plenty of issues. Stuff would nto drain to save it's life (or the plants !!!). I was still fairly new to the game, and just didn't understand. I got a pathetic harvest. That forced me back to basics, and to start learning more. A number of years later, I am still learning ! I don't think it ever really stops. Always something new to learn about.

Boron huh ? Must say, heck of an idea to treat it. I probably would have looked for a nute supplement, and not even thought about crushed up pills.

Now with prop 215 on my side, I am able to attend monthly seminars on this subject. Able to attend classes and courses. We even have a trade school based on this business and it's called Oaksterdam. The ability to learn is endless if you have the will.

But man, I am rambling. Sorry, stoned.

Best odor control I have found is Ona. Ona gel and a homemade odor bucket frickin works wonders. Even the Ona blocks were ok on small scale.

Personally, I love that smell, so I let them stink. The pro's of living out in the boonies in a pot friendly area. :joint:
