I received a notice that MI has applied to put an additional fungicide on apples -- below is an excerpt, just so you can see how important it is to eat organic applies.

Excerpt:

Under section 18 of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and
Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) (7 U.S.C. 136p), at the discretion of the
Administrator, a Federal or State agency may be exempted from any
provision of FIFRA if the Administrator determines that emergency
conditions exist which require the exemption. Michigan Department of
Agriculture has requested the Administrator to issue a specific
exemption for the use of kasugamycin on apples to control fire blight.
Information in accordance with 40 CFR part 166 was submitted as part of
this request.
As part of this request, the applicant asserts that kasugamycin is
needed to control streptomycin-resistant strains of Erwinia amylovora,
the causal pathogen of fire blight, due to the lack of available
alternatives and effective control practices.
The Applicant proposes to make no more than three applications of
Kasumin 2L on not more than 10,000 acres of apples between April 1 and
May 31, 2012 in Berrien, Cass, Grand Traverse, Ionia, Kent, Montcalm,
Newaygo, Oceana, Ottawa, and Van Buren counties. As currently proposed,
the maximum amount of the product to be applied would be 30,000
gallons.
This notice does not constitute a decision by EPA on the
application itself. The regulations governing section 18 of FIFRA
require publication of a notice of receipt of an application for a
specific exemption proposing use of a new chemical (i.e., an active
ingredient) which has not been registered by EPA.
The notice provides an opportunity for public comment on the
application.

The Dirty Dozen and The Clean 15:

http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/summary/

[h=1]Executive Summary[/h] Eat your fruits and vegetables! The health benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables outweigh the risks of pesticide exposure. Use EWG's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides to reduce your exposures as much as possible, but eating conventionally-grown produce is far better than not eating fruits and vegetables at all. The Shopper's Guide to Pesticide in Produce will help you determine which fruits and vegetables have the most pesticide residues and are the most important to buy organic. You can lower your pesticide intake substantially by avoiding the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables and eating the least contaminated produce.
Commodity crop corn used for animal feed and biofuels is almost all produced with genetically modified (GMO) seeds, as is some sweet corn sold for human consumption. Since GMO sweet corn is not labeled as such in US stores, EWG advises those who have concerns about GMOs to buy organic sweet corn.

What's sad is even when you go to the store to buy organic veggies, today I saw something very disturbing at the local Kroger. I reached up for a bunch of romain lettuce, and noticed that the drain area from the spray run off was the most disgusting, moldy, awful thing I've ever noticed (I say noticed on purpose, as it is probably going on all the time). I looked up and saw the store manager wandering around. I pointed at him, and gave him the ol' finger come over here sign. He came over, and I walked him up and down the entire wall of fresh veggies and showed him the situation.....he went white as a ghost and said he'll get it cleaned up right away!

Please...this was going on for a long time, and I'm sure my entire community has been eating food just sitting in bacteria all along. It was an eye opening experience today. Just because something says it's organic, or whatever, it means nothing if it's not handled and stored, and sold in a matter that is healthy.

You should have seen his face as he looked at my 2 yr old daughter sitting in the cart, and I asked him if he'd feed his children food from these shelves. Embarassed isn't even the word for his feelings right then. This is a 5 yr old store too.

Just sad what we have to buy. I'd rather build a big sealed grow and just grow all our own veggies. At least it wouldn't look like that crap.
