oh hell ya dude. an intermittent show for led nerds. you know im down. we could host it and mirror the video on our different channels. People would love to hear a few dude sitting around shooting the shit about diy leds.

Tired of people getting burned by poor quality LED units.

But Sir, i have one question. I saw that video from you on youtube with the name:"mau5capades: Season 1 Finale : 1200w DIY LED harvest vs 1200
At 7.52min i can see how u calculate Gramm per Watt.

1773,93Gramm / 1179Watt = 1,51 gpw
Now i wonder if that is the right way to calculate gpw, this way of calculation doesnt say much. I mean u could finish ur harvest in 7 or 10 weeks, the time can make the gpw resut differnt.

i think it would be better to calculate like that way:

1179Watt / 1000 = 1,179 KW/H
1,179 KW/H * 12 (12 hours light per day in flower) = 14,148
14,148 * 63days (for example 9 weeks flower) = 891,324

1773,93Gramm / 891,324 = 1,990219044926424gpw (if the whole flower time would be 9 weeks)
= 1,791197140433782gpw (10weeks flower)

So your GPW result are even better or not? Or is they way how i calculate wrong :/ If yes please try to explain me if possible :/

But you are right, grams per sqft, or grams per KWH, or a combination or those would be much better.

Great results showing a low-power high-efficiency COB panel can really perform.


I think I am finally getting it, and here are a couple of take-aways I get from your data. My job is to build the most efficient photon generator (cob panel) I can afford. Build it for the most uniform 13 to 17 PAR watts per square foot of floor space (I’m shooting for 1 emitter per square foot to do that). And if I come away with about 1.5 oz per square foot of floor space, then I’m doing pretty good. Good markers to shoot for.

Thats right Buddy. Im starting out trying to show some higher efficiency setups, but ill do more videos discussing some higher dissipation setups like Vero29s on the new hlg240s.

All I am really doing is repackaging all of the amazing info here on RIU, into video format. So the real thanks goes to all the pioneers here that do the testing, posting, & spreadsheets.

anybody have any advice or info for a good closed column extractor? was looking at a couple (extraction experts, best value vac) only two i really found

Even though that is a great driver with constant voltage/constant current adj, you will get slightly different brightness from each cob w/o a current limiting resistor or some kind of current mirror.
My advise, keep the original setup you have and add an HLG185h-c1400 with (4) cxb3070 4k, or cxb3590 5k.

I already have the 2nd driver.
Wired 3 cobs each and have each dialed to 160 watts.
I guess I need to learn about the current mirror.

Did you mean on a separate hs, or on the same one between the CXAs?

Your heatsink can handle 288 heat watts active, or 105w passive. cxa3070@ 1000ma are what? about 48-52% efficient. IDK.
Roughly speaking, your heatsink can handle around dissipation 500w of cxa3070@50%eff.

Thank you never could get that formula to work right, but my heatsink isnt fro HSUAS, but VERY similar, but exactly 8" wide

Is that profle gonna gve good enough light spread in 23"x48" tent?
Ill ad more cobs in the middle...CXB ones this time
I could run the cxa on one driver and cxb on other driver, run the cxa lower to try to increase efficiency.
Ill put cxb's on perimeter, and cxas in middle to reduce center hotpot
over the next year Ill slowly buy CXB cobs as budget allows.
That is if the heatsink without lenses or reflector will be a good enough light spread.

for a fan so nice cooling

@bassman999 Im a visual type of guy, so here is a scale drawing of what your setup will look like. Its a tad weak in the far corners, but you should have plenty of light to raise it off the canopy enough to get a nice spread all the way to the corners. And since you are in a tent, you can run your light a little higher without worrying about photon loss to walkways and such.
overall, I think it will perform quite nicely.

Those cobs in the corners don't have very much sink around them...I'm not sure how well they will be cooled. Looks nice though!

good point, that is a valid concern. I would be willing to take the risk @ only 953ma to max the spread. But i guess Bassman will have to decide if he is comfortable with it.

yeah that's true. the current is pretty low, especially if they are 36V version...not sure what he has. probably not a noticeable issue....

In this design are the cxas are on one driver and cxbs other driver?
my cxas actually only pull 35.6v at 950 ma when measured with my Fluke at least
The HS is actually only 8" if that makes a difference
